Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Thursday presented his Certificate of Return to President Bola Tinubu during a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting marked Adeleke’s first known encounter with the President since his victory in the Osun State governorship election held last Saturday.
Adeleke arrived at the Presidential Villa at about 5:25pm, dressed in a navy blue traditional outfit and carrying a walking stick. He arrived in a black Toyota Land Cruiser SUV alongside the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The governor was later seen shaking hands with Tinubu after the meeting.
Adeleke’s Special Assistant on Digital Media, Olalekan Badmus, shared details of the meeting in a post on X.
“Governor Ademola Adeleke presented his certificate of return to President Tinubu following a closed-door meeting at Aso Villa,” Badmus wrote.
The meeting came a day after Adeleke formally received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
The certificate was presented to him by INEC National Commissioner representing the South-West, Prof Kunle Ajayi, at an event attended by members of Adeleke’s cabinet, political associates and other supporters.
The Certificate of Return is the official document issued by INEC to candidates declared winners of an election. It serves as formal confirmation of the outcome and is an important part of the process leading to the assumption or continuation of office.
Adeleke was declared winner of the Osun governorship election by the State Returning Officer, Prof Joshua Ogunwole, on Sunday.
The governor, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, secured 511,067 votes to defeat the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.
The margin of victory was 66,252 votes.
The result gave Adeleke another term as governor of the state and extended his control over the Osun political structure.
The election had attracted significant attention because of the political importance of Osun and the wider implications of the contest ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Following the declaration of the result, Adeleke thanked voters and promised to continue with his administration’s programmes.
He also made a fresh call for reconciliation and unity in the state, stressing the need for political differences to give way to governance.
On Wednesday, while receiving his Certificate of Return, Adeleke announced plans to establish a N500 million endowment fund for victims of election violence.
The proposed fund is expected to provide assistance to people affected by violence associated with the electoral process.
The governor’s decision to present his Certificate of Return to Tinubu is also significant against the background of the political relationship between the two leaders.
Tinubu is the leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress at the Federal Government level, while Adeleke has been elected under the Accord Party.
Despite their different political platforms, Adeleke has recently expressed appreciation to the President following the Osun election.
After his victory was declared, the governor endorsed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election and thanked the President for what he described as his intervention in matters affecting Osun State.
Adeleke had also directed the state Attorney-General to withdraw a suit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the freezing of the state’s bank account, citing Tinubu’s intervention.
His endorsement of Tinubu attracted reactions from opposition political groups and supporters of the governor.
While some interpreted the development as a possible political realignment ahead of 2027, Adeleke’s camp said his support was based on the President’s performance and did not amount to a political agreement.
The Thursday meeting therefore comes at a time of heightened political activity ahead of the next presidential election.
The outcome of the Osun election has also generated debate within the opposition and the APC, with different political groups drawing lessons from the result.
The APC candidate, Oyebamiji, conceded defeat after the election, although the party said it was studying the results from the various wards and would consider its options within the constitutional framework.
The election was conducted amid tight security, following concerns over possible violence and political tension.
The security agencies had deployed thousands of personnel across the state during the election period to protect voters, electoral officials and sensitive materials.
The peaceful conduct of the election and the subsequent transition process will be important to the state as Adeleke prepares for another term in office.
The governor is expected to focus on governance, infrastructure, education, healthcare and other development priorities during his second term.
His meeting with Tinubu could also open the way for stronger cooperation between the state and the Federal Government, particularly on projects requiring federal support.
For Osun State, the relationship between the state government and the Federal Government could have implications for the implementation of major infrastructure and development programmes.
Adeleke’s presentation of the Certificate of Return to Tinubu also carries a symbolic message of continuity and recognition following a closely watched election.
Although the meeting was held behind closed doors and details of the discussions were not immediately made public, the presentation of the certificate provided a public indication of the governor’s visit to the President.
With Adeleke’s re-election now formally confirmed by INEC and his first post-election meeting with Tinubu completed, attention is expected to shift towards the governor’s plans for his next term and the political developments leading to the 2027 elections.
