In a dramatic turn of events, former Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, has announced his withdrawal from the contest for the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. This development follows an interim court order issued by the Enugu State High Court barring him from participating in the election scheduled for January 10, 2025.

At a press conference held in Enugu on January 9, Okiro expressed his decision to comply with the court’s directive, despite strongly contesting the grounds on which the order was issued. The suit before the court claims Okiro is from Imo State and not Rivers State, where the position has been zoned.

“It is unfortunate that the court did not invite me or hear from me before issuing this obnoxious order, which I first learned about through the media,” Okiro lamented.

Zoning Controversy at the Center

The controversy revolves around the zoning arrangement within Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a socio-political organization that represents Igbo interests globally. The leadership role in contention is reportedly reserved for candidates from Rivers State in this electoral cycle. Okiro, a native of Egbema, has presented various pieces of evidence to affirm his Rivers State indigene status.

“My birth attestation by the National Population Commission and confirmation from my traditional ruler, the Nzeobi of Egbema, all validate my roots in Rivers State,” Okiro stated. He also highlighted his representation of Rivers State in various capacities, including as a member of the South-South People’s Assembly and during Imeobi meetings of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Commitment to Rule of Law

Despite his discontent with the court order, Okiro underscored his commitment to the rule of law. “My obedience to court orders, no matter how unfavorable, demonstrates my dedication to democracy. The rule of law is essential for our collective progress,” he declared.

Okiro also voiced his concerns about the implications of the court’s decision, stating that the order undermines his fundamental rights guaranteed under Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution. Nonetheless, he reiterated his trust in the judicial system and vowed to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.

“I have instructed my lawyers to ensure that justice prevails. I am confident that the court will uphold the principles of natural justice,” he added.

Support from Rivers State

The former police chief expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from his community and the Rivers State government, particularly Governor Siminialayi Fubara. “Your Excellency’s leadership inspires me. I remain committed to advancing the ideals of Ohanaeze Ndigbo—unity, progress, and peaceful coexistence,” Okiro said.

He called on his supporters across Rivers, Imo, and other Igbo-speaking states to remain steadfast and prioritize peace during this period of uncertainty.

Historical Ties to Ohanaeze Ndigbo

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has long been a unifying platform for Igbos, promoting cultural identity, socio-economic development, and political advocacy. The organization’s elections are often contentious, reflecting the intense political and cultural stakes involved.

Okiro’s candidacy had been seen by many as a strong bid for the leadership of the organization. As a retired Inspector General of Police with a distinguished career, his entry into the race was expected to bring credibility and a reformative agenda to the group.

Legal Battle Looms

The court case has now placed a spotlight on the complex dynamics of identity and representation within the Igbo community. Okiro’s critics argue that his ties to Rivers State are insufficient to qualify him for the position under the zoning arrangement, a claim he vehemently denies.

“I am an Igbo man from Rivers State. My records and credentials speak for themselves,” Okiro asserted, listing numerous examples of his representation of Rivers State in national and regional forums.

Despite his withdrawal from the election, Okiro hinted at a long legal battle ahead. “I demand to be heard, and I believe justice will prevail. Together, we will navigate this challenge and emerge stronger,” he said.

Implications for Ohanaeze Leadership

The court order and Okiro’s subsequent withdrawal are expected to reshape the dynamics of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo elections. Analysts believe the incident underscores the need for greater clarity and transparency in the organization’s electoral processes, particularly regarding zoning arrangements.

The fallout from the case may also influence broader discussions about identity, representation, and unity among the Igbo people. As one of Nigeria’s most influential socio-cultural groups, the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo plays a pivotal role in shaping the region’s political and cultural agenda.

A Call for Unity

In his closing remarks, Okiro emphasized the importance of unity within the Igbo community. “Ohanaeze Ndigbo embodies our shared aspirations for progress and peace. Let us prioritize harmony and remain focused on our common goals,” he appealed.

While his withdrawal marks a temporary setback in his political aspirations, Okiro’s resolve to fight for justice and due process highlights his enduring commitment to the Igbo cause.
