A disturbing viral video has ignited public outrage across Nigeria, showing a traditional ruler in Ogun State, Oba Semiu Ogunjobi, assaulting and humiliating a 73-year-old man, Chief Abraham Areola. The incident, which occurred in Orile Ifo, Ogun State, has left citizens questioning the conduct of monarchs and the apparent abuse of power by individuals in positions of traditional authority.

The video, which lasts for just over two minutes, begins with Chief Areola kneeling on the ground, visibly disoriented as two of Oba Ogunjobi’s aides forcibly remove his cap. The elderly man attempts to explain himself, but his words are drowned out by the barrage of insults from the monarch. As Areola pleads for understanding, one of the aides strikes him from behind.

In the background, Oba Ogunjobi’s voice can be heard making threatening remarks, accusing the elderly man of betrayal. “You are a conspirator and a betrayer,” the monarch shouts, “Your children will not succeed. It will never be well with you, your wife, and your children. You will continue to live in abject poverty. You will die and you will turn blind.”

The video, which spread like wildfire on social media, shows the Oba declaring his dominance over the community. “Whoever thinks he is courageous enough should come out to face me. The entire Ifo land belongs to me,” the traditional ruler claims. He continues by threatening to send Areola to prison, stating: “I own the entire Nigeria Police Force. I will send you to prison. Even if you die, we shall bury you, and nothing will happen. Nobody will even know.”

Dispute Over Kingship Supremacy

According to sources within the community, the confrontation was rooted in a longstanding kingship supremacy dispute. The altercation reportedly stemmed from Chief Areola’s support for a coronet Oba, Wasiu, which allegedly irked Oba Ogunjobi. A source close to the victim explained that Areola’s association with the rival figure was seen as a challenge to the monarch’s authority.

In a separate interview with The PUNCH, Chief Areola expressed his confusion and distress, revealing that he had no idea why he was targeted. “I didn’t do anything wrong,” he said, adding that the monarch’s threat of death and imprisonment came without any explanation of the alleged offense. Despite Areola’s statements, Oba Ogunjobi denied being the person seen in the video. He refuted claims that the incident was anything but a misunderstanding, offering no further details.

However, numerous community members, including Emmanuel Ojo, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the State Governor Dapo Abiodun, confirmed the monarch’s identity, condemning the incident. Ojo, who shared the video on his social media platforms, labeled the event as an unacceptable abuse of power, especially given the public nature of the attack. He wrote, “This incident reportedly stemmed from a kingship supremacy dispute.”

Governor’s Reaction

In light of the public outrage, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun’s office has responded with calls for a thorough investigation. Kayode Akinmade, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, expressed deep concern over the assault, saying, “This will be investigated, and if proven to be true, necessary action will be taken.”

Akinmade stressed that the actions of Oba Ogunjobi, if confirmed, were not only a violation of human dignity but also a disgrace to traditional institutions. “Such acts cannot be allowed to go unpunished,” he said, underscoring the importance of holding traditional rulers accountable for their behavior.

A Pattern of Abuse?

This incident is the latest in a series of controversial actions involving traditional rulers and their influence over local affairs. In recent years, there have been numerous reports of monarchs using their power to intimidate and control their subjects, often resorting to violence or public humiliation to settle disputes.

Dr. Kemi Oduwole, a political analyst, noted that such incidents reflect a larger issue within Nigeria’s traditional governance system. “This is a clear example of how traditional leaders often feel above the law. They wield too much power without accountability, and when conflicts arise, they take matters into their own hands, disregarding human rights and the rule of law,” Oduwole explained.

Public Outcry and Calls for Justice

The video has sparked widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians taking to social media to voice their anger. Influential figures, including human rights activists, have demanded that Oba Ogunjobi face punishment for his actions.

“If these kinds of abuses go unchecked, it sends a dangerous message that people in positions of power can treat others however they wish without facing consequences,” said Chioma Eze, a human rights advocate. “It is imperative that the government takes immediate action to show that such behavior will not be tolerated.”

On Twitter, the hashtag #JusticeForChiefAreola began trending, as users expressed their disbelief over the monarch’s actions. Many called for a thorough investigation and legal action, pointing out that the video captured clear evidence of abuse and threats.

The Role of Social Media in Holding Leaders Accountable

The rise of social media as a tool for exposing misconduct has played a significant role in amplifying voices calling for justice. In this case, the viral video of the assault has forced the authorities to confront the issue, putting pressure on both the state government and the federal authorities to ensure that justice is served.

“The power of social media cannot be underestimated in this day and age,” said Olumide Adedeji, a communications expert. “Without platforms like Twitter and Facebook, this incident may have been swept under the rug. Now, the entire country is watching, and the government must act swiftly to address it.”

A Dark Day for Traditional Institutions?

While traditional institutions like the monarchy hold a significant place in Nigeria’s cultural landscape, incidents like these raise questions about the relevance and accountability of such structures in modern society. Are traditional rulers still respected by the people, or has their authority become synonymous with oppression?

“Tradition should be about protecting and guiding the people, not about using fear and violence to maintain control,” argued Oduwole. “If monarchs like Oba Ogunjobi are allowed to continue unchecked, they will further erode trust in the traditional institutions they represent.”
