In a decisive move to address the escalating violence in Osun State, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has ordered the immediate deployment of additional tactical squads to the troubled region. This action comes in response to a series of violent incidents that have disrupted peace, led to property destruction, and resulted in the tragic loss of innocent lives.

The Nigeria Police Force, expressing strong condemnation of the recent unrest, emphasized its commitment to restoring law and order. “Violence undermines the democratic process and threatens the wellbeing of citizens,” the IGP stated. “We are resolute in identifying and prosecuting those responsible for these heinous acts to ensure they face the full weight of the law.”

The unrest in Osun State has been marked by a series of violent clashes, notably between the Ifon and Ilobu communities. In mid-January 2025, the state government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in these areas following renewed hostilities that resulted in injuries and heightened tensions. Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, announced the curfew, stating it was essential “to forestall further escalation of the crisis” and that security personnel, including the Army, Police, and Civil Defence, had been deployed to maintain order. citeturn0search0

Further compounding the state’s security challenges, early February witnessed deadly attacks on the Ido Ayegunle community. Governor Ademola Adeleke expressed shock at the incidents and commended security agencies for their swift response. He emphasized the state’s commitment to justice, ordering the immediate arrest and prosecution of those behind the attacks, regardless of their societal status. “I call on residents to remain calm. The security agencies are already rounding up the perpetrators of the violence. Culprits will face justice,” Governor Adeleke assured. citeturn0search1

In light of these events, IGP Egbetokun issued a stern warning to individuals and groups intent on disrupting peace in Osun State. “The Force will not tolerate any act of lawlessness, hooliganism, or anarchy,” he declared. “Perpetrators of these criminal acts will be identified and made to face the consequences of their unwarranted actions.” He urged citizens to remain calm, assuring them that efforts are underway to restore normalcy.

The IGP also called upon Osun’s indigenes, leaders, and stakeholders to reject violence and engage in lawful activities. He highlighted the judiciary’s role as the ultimate arbiter in electoral disputes and urged political actors to respect and abide by its rulings, thereby upholding the rule of law and democratic principles.

Governor Adeleke, addressing concerns over potential disruptions to the upcoming local government elections scheduled for February 22, 2025, warned against plots by opposition elements to incite violence. He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to a peaceful and credible electoral process, stating, “As a government, we are committed to free and fair elections.” The governor also cautioned against any attempts to foment crisis, emphasizing that security agencies have been directed to deal decisively with any promoters of violence within the bounds of the law. citeturn0search3

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to clamping down on violent actors intent on creating chaos in any part of the country. The situation in Osun State is under close surveillance, with measures being enforced to ensure a safe environment for all residents. Citizens are encouraged to continue their lawful activities without fear, as security agencies work diligently to restore peace and order.

In a collaborative effort to address the root causes of the unrest, the state government has initiated the formation of a Committee of Stakeholders. This committee comprises representatives from the affected communities, security service chiefs, members of the State Council of Obas, and other relevant bodies.

As Osun State navigates these challenging times, the combined efforts of federal and state authorities underscore a unified commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of democratic values. The deployment of additional tactical squads and the proactive measures taken by both the Nigeria Police Force and the state government reflect a comprehensive strategy to address the immediate threats and prevent future occurrences of violence in the region.
