APC Slams Tambuwal Over Defection Criticism, Defends Exodus to Tinubu’s Camp

    Share

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has fiercely defended the wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), attributing the exodus to growing support for President Bola Tinubu’s economic reform agenda.

In a statement released in Abuja on Sunday, Felix Morka, the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, took aim at former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, who recently criticized the defections. Tambuwal had claimed that politicians leaving the PDP were motivated by “stomach infrastructure,” implying they were driven by selfish interests rather than principles.

However, Morka fired back, describing Tambuwal as a “notorious party defector” with no moral right to criticize others.

“There is wisdom in the saying that those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. That wisdom has clearly eluded Tambuwal,” Morka stated. “His comments more accurately reflect his own history of political migrations. His movements were driven by self-interest, not conscience.”

Morka did not hold back in highlighting Tambuwal’s history of switching political allegiances. He recalled that Tambuwal moved from the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) to the Democratic People’s Party (DPP) in 2007, then back to the ANPP, before joining the PDP.

The former governor later defected to the APC in 2014, only to return to the PDP in 2018. Morka argued that Tambuwal’s frequent party changes were based on personal gain rather than ideology or conscience.

“Tambuwal’s political career is a testament to self-serving decisions. It is laughable that he now attempts to question the integrity of those aligning with Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria,” Morka added.

Political analysts say the APC’s response underscores the tension between the ruling party and the PDP as defections continue to shake the opposition.

    Aligning with Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

According to Morka, the defectors are not driven by greed but by their support for Tinubu’s bold economic reforms. He argued that Tambuwal’s criticism failed to acknowledge the crisis within the PDP, which he said was pushing members towards the APC.

“Contrary to Tambuwal’s claims, PDP members are leaving because they see hope in Tinubu’s policies. The APC’s appeal is growing, and it is not driven by selfish interests,” Morka stated.

He pointed out that Tinubu’s administration has achieved significant milestones, including surpassing Nigeria’s Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) quota of 1.5 million barrels per day.

“This achievement results from improved security and targeted oil sector reforms,” Morka explained. “Under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria has also recorded consistent trade surpluses, increased Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs), a strong stock market, and an enhanced foreign reserve.”

Political observers note that Tinubu’s economic policies have indeed attracted both praise and criticism. While some hail his bold steps, others argue that the economic pain felt by citizens due to subsidy removal and inflation could fuel opposition sentiments.

    APC’s Challenge to Tambuwal

Morka challenged Tambuwal to take responsibility for the PDP’s internal struggles instead of attacking defectors. He argued that Tambuwal should focus on rebuilding his party rather than questioning others’ political choices.

He urged Tambuwal and his allies to “apologize to their party members and adopt a more humble and reflective approach going forward.”

Morka’s statement comes at a time when the PDP is grappling with leadership disputes and internal divisions. Analysts suggest that the defections could further weaken the party’s position ahead of future elections.

    Political Crossfire Intensifies

Tambuwal’s remarks about “stomach infrastructure” sparked widespread debate, with some supporting his position while others criticized him for hypocrisy. Critics pointed out that Tambuwal’s own political journey is marked by strategic alliances rather than ideological loyalty.

One political commentator noted, “Tambuwal’s history of party-switching makes his criticism sound hollow. It’s a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black.”

Others, however, defended Tambuwal, arguing that his comments were aimed at calling out political opportunism.

As the political drama continues to unfold, analysts predict that more defections may occur as politicians position themselves for future electoral gains.

Background on Defections and Political Realignments

Defections are not new in Nigeria’s political landscape. Historically, politicians have switched parties for strategic reasons, including securing political power or aligning with the ruling party’s policies.

During former President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure, several APC members defected to the PDP, citing dissatisfaction with party leadership. Similarly, the APC witnessed defections during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration due to internal crises and policy disagreements.

Political observers argue that the current wave of defections to the APC reflects strategic positioning as politicians seek relevance under Tinubu’s administration.

    Outlook and Implications

The APC’s robust defense of the defectors suggests that the party is keen on consolidating its power base by attracting opposition members. Meanwhile, the PDP faces the challenge of managing internal conflicts while retaining its members.

With the political landscape becoming increasingly volatile, analysts predict that the battle of narratives will continue as both parties try to control public perception.

As Nigeria navigates economic challenges and political realignments, the loyalty of politicians will be tested. The outcome of this defection drama could shape the country’s political future.
