In a recent social media post, former US President Donald Trump has once again stirred the pot with his controversial comments about Canada’s political status. Referring to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the “Governor” of America’s “51st state,” Trump’s remarks have sparked debate and criticism, especially in the context of his growing rhetoric surrounding Canada’s potential integration into the United States.

On Thursday, Trump took to his Truth Social media platform to voice his opinion ahead of an international hockey match between the United States and Canada. The former president expressed his support for the American team and went on to declare that, in the future, Canada might join the US as the 51st state. He also mentioned that he would be speaking to US governors in Washington, DC, and extended an invitation to Trudeau, who he cheekily called “Governor,” to join him for the event.

“I’ll be calling our GREAT American Hockey Team this morning to spur them on towards victory tonight against Canada, which with FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State,” Trump said. “I will be speaking before the Governors tonight in D.C., and will sadly, therefore, be unable to attend. But we will all be watching, and if Governor Trudeau would like to join us, he would be most welcome. Good luck to everybody, and have a GREAT game tonight. So exciting! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”

This was not the first time Trump has referred to Trudeau in such a way. In December of 2024, following a dinner meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, the former president took to social media again, calling Trudeau “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.” His playful use of the term “Governor” in reference to the Canadian leader has raised eyebrows, with many wondering whether Trump is being serious or simply indulging in his usual style of provocative rhetoric.

Trump’s comments come on the heels of a similar statement he made earlier this year in February, during an interview aired on the Super Bowl pre-show. During that interview, Trump expressed a “serious” desire for Canada to become part of the United States, a notion that has long been a point of controversy.

Many have questioned Trump’s motives behind these statements. Is he truly considering the political consequences of such a suggestion, or is it simply another instance of his love for creating headlines? Given Trump’s well-known tendency to make bold and sometimes outlandish statements, it’s unclear whether he is genuinely serious about this suggestion or if it is another way for him to attract attention.

However, Trump’s ongoing comments have not gone unnoticed by Canadian officials. While Trudeau has not publicly responded to Trump’s remarks, many Canadians have taken issue with the idea of being subsumed into the United States. For many, the very suggestion of Canada becoming the 51st state feels like an affront to the country’s sovereignty and independence. It touches on a sensitive issue, as Canada takes great pride in its unique national identity, separate from that of the United States.

Trump’s latest statements echo broader political debates about the relationship between the US and its northern neighbour. While the two countries have historically enjoyed a close relationship, with shared borders, trade, and security ties, Canada has always maintained its autonomy. Any suggestion of statehood for Canada would inevitably provoke a backlash from both politicians and citizens who value the country’s independence.
In Canada, the very suggestion of statehood has been widely criticised. Canadian politician and former Member of Parliament, Michael Chong, responded to Trump’s comments on social media, writing: “Canada is not, and will never be, the 51st state of the United States. We are proud of our independence and sovereignty.” His response is echoed by many across the political spectrum in Canada.

While Trump’s comments may be dismissed as nothing more than political banter, they are part of a long-standing pattern of statements aimed at generating controversy. For some, it is a reminder of Trump’s unorthodox approach to politics, and for others, it raises questions about the US’s role in global politics and its relationship with its closest neighbour.
