Popular Nigerian gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo, has taken legal action against social media commentator Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), after he allegedly defamed her online. The lawsuit, filed on March 3, 2025, accuses VDM of making false statements that tarnish the singer’s reputation and cause harm to her career.

The legal action comes after VDM posted videos on social media accusing Mercy Chinwo of mismanaging funds from her shows and failing to pay her former record label. The label, owned by Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, commonly known as EeZee Tee, has been at the centre of a dispute between the singer and her former boss. VDM also claimed that Chinwo had violated her contract before leaving the label.

Chinwo, through her lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi, stated in the lawsuit that VDM’s comments were “libellous, malicious, and damaging.” Olajengbesi added that VDM had no direct involvement in the matter between Chinwo and EeZee Tee and that the accusations were false. The singer also claims that VDM has used his large online following to spread harmful and untrue information about her.

The lawsuit requests that VDM delete the defamatory videos, issue a public apology on all his social media platforms, and publish a similar apology in two widely circulated national newspapers. Chinwo is also seeking ₦1 billion in general damages for defamation, ₦100 million in punitive damages, and ₦25 million to cover the costs of the legal proceedings. Additionally, the lawsuit demands 10% interest per annum on the total amount until it is fully paid.

This lawsuit is the latest chapter in an ongoing conflict between Mercy Chinwo and her former record label. Earlier this year, Chinwo accused EeZee Tee of exploitation, making threats to her life, and spreading false rumours about the paternity of her child. In an emotional video shared on social media, the gospel singer revealed that the situation had become so dangerous that she had to move from Lagos to Port Harcourt to protect herself.

Mercy Chinwo’s decision to take legal action against VDM has drawn mixed reactions. Some fans have rallied behind her, praising her for standing up for her reputation, while others have criticised VDM for using his platform to spread unverified information.
