LP Senator’s Call for Akpoti Suspension Sparks Tensions With Obidients

    Share

A brewing political controversy has emerged following the recommendation of a six-month suspension for Senator Natasha Akpoti by a member of the Labour Party (LP). This recommendation, made by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions, has sparked strong reactions, especially among the supporters of the LP, also known as “Obidients.”

Bashir Ahmad, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former personal assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari, has expressed his disappointment over the situation. According to Ahmad, it was a Labour Party senator who recommended Akpoti’s suspension, which includes halting both her salary and the salaries of her staff during the period of suspension. Despite this, Ahmad claims that the Obidients, a group of fervent supporters of the LP, are now directing their anger and insults at the APC and its members.

“It was a Labour Party senator, who also serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions, that recommended Senator Natasha Akpoti’s suspension for six months, including the stoppage of both her salary and that of her staff during the suspension period. Yet, Labour Party members on this platform are busy insulting the APC and its members instead,” Ahmad said in a tweet, pointing to the hypocrisy he believes exists within the current political debate.

Senator Natasha Akpoti, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, has been embroiled in various controversies since her election. A member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) before she joined the Senate, Akpoti has made headlines for her outspoken nature on national issues, particularly concerning the rights and welfare of her constituents. However, her tenure has not been without complications.

The recommendation for her suspension stems from a series of actions considered unethical by some members of the Senate.
