The Kwara State Police Command has arrested eight persons in connection with the tragic death of a two-month-old baby, Adam Tahiru, who was earlier reported missing in the Zango area of Ilorin, the state capital.
The incident occurred on the night of May 25, 2025, and left the community in shock after the infant’s lifeless body was later discovered in a well within the same neighbourhood.
Speaking at a press briefing in Ilorin on Saturday, the Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, disclosed that the case was one of several under active investigation, alongside ongoing efforts to tackle rising insecurity in the state.
According to the police commissioner, the baby’s mother, Aishat Tahiru, of No. 9 Maiduku area, Zango, had reported the child missing to the Kulende Police Station. She told police that around 9:30 p.m., while performing her evening prayers, she left baby Adam sleeping on a sofa inside her room. A short while later, she asked her daughter Mariam to check on the baby, but the child was nowhere to be found.
“An alarm was raised immediately,” said CP Ojo. “Neighbours joined in a frantic search throughout the area, but unfortunately, all efforts to locate the baby were unsuccessful.”
The case was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Ilorin on May 27 for a deeper probe. During the investigation, the police discovered the lifeless body of baby Adam in a well within the same community.
“Following intelligence gathering and preliminary findings, eight suspects were arrested and are currently undergoing rigorous interrogation,” Ojo stated.
The commissioner assured that the investigation was still ongoing and promised that all individuals found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
In a related development, CP Ojo also provided updates on other major cases, including the abduction of a prominent petrol dealer, Abbas Daniyan, and his manager, Abubakar Issa, who were kidnapped 23 days ago in Gbugbu town, Edu Local Government Area.
He said the police are working round the clock and have launched intensive forest combing operations to locate the victims and arrest the suspects. He also revealed that at least three other kidnap cases had occurred after the May 10 abduction incident.
In total, the police announced the arrest of 37 suspects for various crimes ranging from conspiracy, kidnapping, illegal possession of firearms, culpable homicide, burglary, receiving stolen goods, and aiding and abetting criminals.
Commissioner Ojo reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order across the state, urging residents to stay vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.
“We will not rest until those threatening the peace and safety of our communities are brought to justice,” he declared.
