NDLEA Raids Drug Dens in Kano, Arrests 36 Ahead of Sallah

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano State Command, has arrested 36 suspects and seized various illegal drugs during a major operation ahead of the Eid-El-Kabir celebrations.

The agency said the raids, which took place on May 30 and 31, were part of efforts to ensure a safe and drug-free environment during the festive period. According to a statement released on Sunday by the command’s spokesman, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, the arrests were made in different parts of the state known for drug-related activities.

The NDLEA spokesman quoted the State Commander, Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, as saying that the operation was carried out in areas including Makabartar Dan’agundi, Kwari, Kofar Na’isa, and Kano Line — all of which have been identified as hot spots for drug trade and abuse.

“Several suspects were picked up, and different types of illicit substances were recovered, including cannabis sativa, suck and die, diazepam, rubber solution, and other harmful drugs,” Idris-Ahmad said.

He praised the dedication of the NDLEA officers involved in the operation and reaffirmed the agency’s mission to keep Kano free from drug abuse and trafficking. “We remain committed to maintaining peace and public safety, especially during important festivals like Eid-El-Kabir,” he added.

On behalf of the agency’s national chairman, Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), the commander also sent goodwill messages to the people of Kano and encouraged them to celebrate responsibly.

“We urge all citizens to avoid drug use or involvement in any illegal drug activities during this period. Let us make this Sallah celebration peaceful, healthy, and safe for all,” he said.

The NDLEA reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and called on members of the public to report any suspicious activities in their communities. The agency stressed that collective action is crucial to winning the fight against drug abuse.

This raid comes at a time when authorities across the country are stepping up efforts to tackle drug-related crimes, especially in urban centres like Kano, which has struggled with rising cases of youth involvement in substance abuse.

The NDLEA has in recent months intensified its community outreach and enforcement actions as part of the nationwide campaign to curb drug addiction, particularly among young people.

As Eid-El-Kabir approaches, the agency said it would continue its surveillance and patrols to prevent any attempts to sell or distribute illegal drugs during the holiday.

The command concluded by reminding residents that a drug-free society begins with individual and community responsibility and encouraged cooperation with law enforcement agencies in ensuring a safer Kano State.
