There was drama at a recent All Progressives Congress (APC) North East zonal meeting when the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, was physically pushed around by some angry party members.
A video of the incident, which has now gone viral, shows Ganduje being surrounded and jostled by a crowd of agitated APC members during the event. The reason for their anger is still not fully clear, but party insiders say it may be linked to ongoing disagreements over party leadership and zoning arrangements in the region.
Dr. Ganduje, a former governor of Kano State, was appointed APC National Chairman in August 2023 after the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu. Since then, he has faced several challenges from different factions within the party, especially in the North.
The North East zone, which includes states like Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, and Taraba, has been a key battleground for influence in the APC. Some party members from the zone have accused the national leadership of ignoring their interests.
This latest incident raises fresh concerns about unity within the ruling party ahead of future elections. So far, Ganduje has not made an official statement on what happened.
Party officials say they are working to calm tensions and restore peace among members.
