Several communities across Ondo State have been severely affected by floods following days of heavy rainfall, leading to the destruction of roads, bridges, homes, and farmlands.
The torrential rain, which has persisted for over a week, has left many residents stranded in parts of Owo, Akoko South West, Ilaje, Ese Odo, and Okitipupa local government areas. Communities such as Uso and Igbokoda are among the worst hit.
Many residents now face difficulties accessing their farms, markets, and workplaces. Property worth millions of naira has been lost, with several houses submerged or destroyed by floodwaters.
Speaking on the situation, a community leader in Igbokoda, Zebulon Emaye, said the flooding is the worst the town has ever experienced. He blamed blocked drainage systems and poor street layouts for making the situation worse.
“This is the most devastating flood in our history. The government must act fast to help those affected,” he said.
Also speaking, Jonathan Akintunde, a resident of Okitipupa, called on the Ondo State government and emergency agencies to provide relief materials and financial assistance to displaced families.
“The rain has not stopped, and people are sleeping outside or in flooded houses. We need urgent help,” Akintunde said.
Residents are appealing to the government to fix the roads and bridges and improve drainage to prevent future disasters. Flooding during the rainy season is a common issue in Nigeria, especially in areas with poor infrastructure and inadequate drainage.
