The factional Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has met with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, at the minister’s private residence in Abuja.
Although details of the meeting remain unknown, the timing has raised eyebrows, coming shortly after Abure’s faction called on 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to leave the party over his reported alignment with a coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The meeting has further fueled speculation about Wike’s influence in the internal crisis facing opposition parties. Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), currently serves as a minister in the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government. He has previously been accused of working behind the scenes to destabilize the PDP and other opposition parties.
Just days before the meeting, Abure publicly warned Abia State Governor Alex Otti against giving the impression that he has not joined forces with a rival LP faction working with the ADC coalition.
While neither Abure nor Wike has issued an official statement regarding the purpose of their meeting, political observers see it as part of the ongoing realignment within Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
