Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has responded to social media reactions after he was seen personally serving food at a charity event in Imo State last week.
The event, called “Jubilee of Hope,” was aimed at helping underprivileged citizens. Videos and photos of Obi serving food sparked debates online. Some critics accused him of seeking political gain, while others praised his humility.
Obi dismissed the claims, saying the event was not about publicity but about promoting true leadership through service. In a statement on his X handle on Sunday, he said, “Let me be clear, that event was not about me. It was called the Jubilee of Hope, and its purpose is straightforward — to remind us all that true leadership is service, and that those who have must never forget those who do not.”
He explained that the event was private and that he did not invite the press. Obi added that many respected Nigerians, including Cardinal John Onaiyekan and Senator Osita Izunaso, also took part in serving at the event.
Obi said he stayed longer at the event because attendees asked him to serve them directly. “Service is not special — it is expected,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor also shared that he lives a simple life, serving guests personally and doing household chores, stressing that humility is not a campaign strategy but a way of life.
Calling for a shift in Nigerian leadership culture, Obi urged leaders and citizens to embrace service and compassion. “We cannot speak of building a New Nigeria while ignoring the hungry, the forgotten, and the poor,” he said. “A new Nigeria is possible.”
