Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has claimed that former President Muhammadu Buhari died from blood cancer.
Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital after a long battle with an undisclosed illness. His death came two years after completing his second term as Nigeria’s president in 2023.
In a Facebook post following the announcement of Buhari’s death, Sowore wrote: “Buhari died of (BLOOD CANCER) Leukemia.”
The federal government has yet to officially confirm the cause of death, only stating that Buhari died after a period of illness.
Buhari, a former military head of state and Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, is set to be buried in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, according to Islamic rites. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared seven days of national mourning and ordered flags to fly at half-mast nationwide.
