Awujale of Ijebuland Laid to Rest in Ijebu Ode

The Awujale of Ijebuland and Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarch, Oba Sikiru Adetona, was laid to rest on Monday at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The respected royal died on Sunday at the age of 91, after ruling the Ijebu people for 65 years. He ascended the throne on April 2, 1960.

His burial ceremony was attended by top government officials, political leaders, traditional rulers, and business figures from across the country. A federal government delegation led by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Other dignitaries at the event included Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Ogun governors Olusegun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel, business mogul Aliko Dangote, Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi), and many others.

The Chief Imam of Ijebuland, Miftaudeen Gbadegesin Ayanbadejo, led the Islamic Janazah prayer before the monarch was buried according to Islamic rites.

In his tribute, Governor Abiodun praised the late king as “a monarch like no other” who redefined traditional leadership. He described Oba Adetona as a father figure, a legend, and a man whose influence extended beyond Ogun State.

“The Awujale ruled for 65 years, and it’s almost like we have forgotten what succession even looks like. But we have a peaceful system in Ijebuland and the process will be orderly,” the governor assured.

Former Governor Osoba described the Awujale as a sharp-minded leader who maintained his strength and clarity until his final moments.

“Baba lived a fulfilled life. He remained respected and loved till the end,” he said.

Aliko Dangote also paid tribute, calling the Awujale a man of great influence, noting his personal relationship with the late monarch.

Oba Adetona was known not only for his long reign but also for his firm voice in national matters, modernising the traditional institution while maintaining deep cultural values.

As Ijebuland and Nigeria mourn, tributes continue to pour in for a monarch many have called “irreplaceable.”
