The United Kingdom has officially mourned the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in a private clinic in London.
In a short statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, the British High Commission in Nigeria expressed sympathy to Buhari’s family, the Nigerian government, and the people of Nigeria.
“The British High Commission Nigeria mourns the passing of the former president, HE General Muhammadu Buhari GCFR. Our condolences go out to his family, the people of Nigeria, and the Nigerian government,” the statement read.
Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, died while receiving treatment in London for an undisclosed illness. His death sparked tributes from around the world, including messages from the United States, China, and other foreign missions.
The late president is scheduled to be buried on Tuesday in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.
