Troops of Operation Safe Haven have turned down a bribe of N13.7 million offered by terrorists during an operation along the Jos-Sanga Road in Plateau State, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has revealed.
Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed this while briefing journalists on Thursday in Abuja about ongoing military operations across the country.
According to Kangye, the troops were responding to a distress call when they intercepted a vehicle suspected to be linked to terrorist activities. Upon searching the vehicle, soldiers discovered weapons, ammunition, and the large cash sum. The suspects reportedly tried to bribe the soldiers, but the troops refused and arrested two individuals.
“The suspects attempted to induce troops with monetary gratification, which they declined. Troops arrested two suspects, recovered weapons, ammunition, a vehicle, and the sum of N13.7 million. Investigation is ongoing,” Kangye said.
He further noted that the operation was part of broader efforts in Plateau, Kaduna, and Nasarawa states, where troops carried out offensive missions and responded to several distress calls. As a result, 12 suspects were arrested, several terrorists killed, and three kidnapped victims rescued.
Recovered items included firearms, motorcycles, vehicles, and illicit drugs. Kangye praised the professionalism and resilience of the troops and urged Nigerians to support the military by reporting suspicious activities.
“We appreciate the support of Nigerians. Everyone, including the media, plays a vital role in ensuring national security,” he added.
