The Allied Peoples Movement has won all the 20 chairmanship seats contested in Monday’s local government elections in Bauchi State, according to the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission.
The party also secured 319 of the 323 councillorship seats contested across the state, recording a sweeping victory in the election.
The results were announced by the Chairperson of BASIEC, Jummai Abubakar, after the conclusion of voting, counting, collation and verification of results.
Abubakar declared that all 20 candidates fielded by the APM emerged victorious in the chairmanship election across the state’s local government areas.
“Following the conclusion of voting, counting, collation and verification, I, Jummai Abubakar, Chairperson of BASIEC, hereby declare that all 20 APM candidates emerged victorious as Chairmen of the respective Local Government Areas,” she said.
The result gives the APM control of all the local government councils in Bauchi State and places the party in a strong position at the grassroots level.
The commission also declared APM candidates winners in 319 of the 323 councillorship positions contested during the election.
The results showed the strength of the party across the state, as its candidates secured victories in almost all the wards where elections were conducted.
Among the chairmanship results announced by the commission, Bappah Aliyu won Alkaleri Local Government Area with 107,482 votes.
Umar Mohammed emerged victorious in Bauchi Local Government Area with 125,170 votes, while Zakka Luka won Bogoro Local Government Area with 25,282 votes.
The results were declared after election officials completed the collation and verification of results from the various polling units and wards.
The outcome is expected to have political implications for Bauchi State, as control of local government councils gives the ruling party or dominant political party significant influence at the grassroots.
Local government elections are important in Nigeria because councils are responsible for providing several basic services to rural and urban communities, including local roads, markets, sanitation and other community-level projects.
The councils also serve as an important link between state governments and residents, particularly in rural communities.
The sweeping victory by the APM means that the party will have control of the elected local government chairmen and a large majority of councillors across Bauchi State.
The election also provides the party with an opportunity to strengthen its grassroots structures ahead of future political contests.
Political parties often use local government elections to build support at ward and community levels because councillors and chairmen maintain direct contact with voters.
The APM victory therefore gives the party a broad network across the state and could increase its visibility among voters.
However, local government elections in Nigeria have frequently attracted debates over their conduct, especially because state electoral commissions are responsible for organising them.
Unlike federal and state elections, which are conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, local government elections are handled by State Independent Electoral Commissions.
The role of state electoral commissions has generated calls from some political groups and civil society organisations for greater independence and transparency in local council elections.
The Bauchi poll was nevertheless conducted by BASIEC, which later announced the results after completing the required collation and verification process.
The commission’s announcement formally confirmed the victory of the APM candidates in the chairmanship election.
With all 20 chairmanship seats secured, the party is now expected to focus on the transition process and the administration of the councils.
The newly elected chairmen will be expected to address challenges facing their respective local government areas and work with traditional institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders to improve development at the grassroots.
For the councillors, their responsibilities will include representing their wards and participating in the legislative and oversight activities of the local government councils.
The 319 councillorship victories recorded by the APM also mean that the party will dominate the council legislative structures.
Only four councillorship seats went to other parties, according to the results announced by BASIEC.
The scale of the victory is likely to trigger political discussions in Bauchi, particularly over the reasons behind the APM’s dominance and the performance of other parties that participated in the election.
The election could also influence preparations for future elections in the state, as political parties are expected to assess their performance and strengthen their structures at the ward and local government levels.
For the APM, the results represent a major political gain and a strong endorsement of its candidates by voters, according to the party’s likely interpretation of the outcome.
For other parties, the results could lead to internal reviews of their campaign strategies, candidate selection and grassroots mobilisation.
The newly elected local government officials will now face the task of translating their electoral victories into effective governance.
Residents are expected to demand improvements in basic infrastructure, sanitation, roads, markets, education, healthcare and other services that directly affect communities.
The importance of the councils is particularly significant in rural areas, where local government remains a major channel through which government services and development programmes reach residents.
The Bauchi election results have therefore given the APM control of a key level of government across the state.
With all 20 chairmanship positions and 319 councillorship seats won, the party has emerged as the dominant force in the state’s local government administration.
