Former Senator Dino Melaye appeared in court today dressed in a lawyer’s wig and gown for the first time, marking his debut as a barrister in a Nigerian courtroom.

Melaye, who once represented Kogi West in the Nigerian Senate, was recently called to the Nigerian Bar alongside 5,733 others just weeks ago. The Call to Bar is the official ceremony that allows law graduates in Nigeria to become qualified lawyers.

His appearance in full legal attire surprised many, as it was the first time he was seen in court not as a politician or witness, but as a practicing lawyer.

Melaye, known for his dramatic and outspoken style in the National Assembly, has added “barrister” to his growing list of titles, having earlier studied law and completed the mandatory Law School programme.

Observers say Melaye’s decision to step into the legal profession may signal a new phase in his public career.
