Veteran Nigerian entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has shared a personal and surprising encounter with the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

In a post on his official X handle (formerly Twitter), Charly Boy revealed that Peter Obi paid him an unexpected early morning visit at his home — and brought along a “Ghana Must Go” bag filled with an unusual gift.

Charly Boy narrated that the visit took place around 5:00 am, following a phone call from Obi at 1:00 am, during which the former Anambra State governor informed him he would like to stop by for a short visit.

Despite the odd timing, Charly Boy agreed, and Obi showed up at his residence carrying a large “Ghana Must Go” bag.

Writing in Pidgin English, Charly Boy recalled the moment:

“As I come downstairs to meet am, na so I see one big Ghana Must Go by the entrance of my sitting room. I look the bag, I just dey wonder wetin fit dey inside?”

He said the two of them sat down and talked about Nigeria, politics, family, and national challenges for nearly two hours.

After the conversation, Obi pointed to the bag and told him, “See small thing I bring for you.” Out of courtesy, Charly Boy said he thanked him without checking the contents immediately.

However, after Obi left, curiosity got the better of him. When he opened the bag, he was taken aback by what he saw.

“Inside the bag was 3 bottles of roasted groundnuts. Many alligator pepper, kolanuts, pawpaw, oranges, agara, mangos, bananas etc. wey Obi pack by himself,” he wrote.

Charly Boy said he couldn’t help but laugh when he saw the humble but meaningful contents.

He later called Obi to thank him, and the former presidential candidate reportedly responded:

“Senior, I no fit give you money, but I fit give you this one. Na my hand pick.”

The gesture, according to Charly Boy, showed a unique form of “native intelligence”, humility, and personal connection that is rare among Nigerian politicians.

Charly Boy has been a staunch supporter of Peter Obi and an active member of the Obidient movement, which backed Obi during the 2023 presidential election.
