Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has relieved all commissioners and public officers affected by the recent Supreme Court judgment concerning their appointments. The governor made the announcement on Wednesday during a valedictory session with his cabinet at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The decision was confirmed in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
Governor Fubara expressed appreciation to the outgoing commissioners for their dedication, service, and contributions to the development of Rivers State over the past two years.
“I thank all of you for your sacrifice and efforts in serving the people of Rivers State. Your contributions are not taken for granted,” the governor said during the session.
The Supreme Court had earlier delivered a ruling that affected the legality of certain appointments, particularly those made during a period of political disagreement within the state. The judgment effectively nullified the appointments of several commissioners who were loyal to the opposing political faction.
While Governor Fubara did not mention specific names or the number of officials affected, sources within the government say the action aligns with the court’s directive and aims to ensure that all appointments are in strict compliance with legal provisions.
The governor used the opportunity to call on Nigerians to reflect on the meaning of independence and continue to work towards peace, unity, and development.
He also urged the people of Rivers State and Nigerians at large to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in building a stronger and more secure nation.
“As we mark 65 years of independence, let us embrace unity and work together for a brighter future,” Fubara said.
Governor Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to lead Rivers State with renewed energy and focus, promising to continue delivering good governance and prioritising the welfare of citizens.
He concluded by wishing all Nigerians a happy independence anniversary, expressing hope for a more prosperous and united country.
