Nigeria at 65: APC Has Diminished the Nation – Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of weakening Nigeria through what he described as incompetent, corrupt, and divisive leadership.

Speaking during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Obi said the country has been “greatly diminished” under the APC-led Federal Government, which he blames for reversing the gains made since the return of democracy in 1999.

“In 1999, we overcame military dictatorship and restored democracy, beginning a renewed journey toward prosperity, freedom, and justice,” Obi said. “That journey helped us build Africa’s largest economy and strengthen democratic institutions.”

“But over the last decade, under the APC’s incompetent, divisive, and corrupt leadership, Nigeria has been greatly diminished.”

The former Anambra State governor noted that Nigeria had once held great promise, both at independence in 1960 and during the early years of democratic governance. He said the country was positioned to be Africa’s giant and a global economic force, but those hopes have faded.

Obi criticised the current administration for pushing more Nigerians into poverty and hardship, pointing out that over 15 million people fell below the poverty line in the first year alone of President Tinubu’s government.

“Despite these challenges, the government still demands more taxes from citizens who get little or nothing in return,” he added.

The Labour Party leader said many Nigerians are losing faith in the country, not because of lack of patriotism, but because of broken leadership and worsening living conditions.

Obi’s remarks come as Nigerians reflect on 65 years of independence, with many expressing concerns over rising inflation, insecurity, unemployment, and a weakening naira.

He called on citizens to continue demanding better governance and urged leaders to focus on people-centred policies that will lift citizens out of poverty and restore the country’s dignity.
