Tragedy struck Sumore village in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Tuesday when a 30-year-old woman, identified as Adams Hannafi, was found dead after reportedly taking her own life.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 3:00pm when the mother of four allegedly hanged herself from a tree in a bushy area near the village. Passersby discovered her lifeless body and quickly alerted the authorities.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Jigawa State Police Command, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, said officers from Yalwawa Police Division were dispatched to the scene immediately after receiving the report.
“On arrival, the team found the body of a woman hanging from a tree. She was carefully brought down, examined, and no signs of foul play were observed,” SP Shiisu stated.
He added that the body was taken to Dutse General Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed her dead on arrival. Preliminary police investigations suggest that the deceased had been suffering from mental health issues prior to the incident.
The woman, described as a housewife, leaves behind her husband and four young children. Her death has sparked concern among residents and authorities alike about the growing mental health challenges in local communities.
Reacting to the sad development, the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Dahiru Muhammad, expressed deep sorrow and urged families and community members to pay close attention to individuals showing signs of emotional or mental distress.
“This unfortunate incident is a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health. We encourage families to seek medical help early if they notice unusual behaviour or distress in their loved ones,” CP Muhammad said.
Mental health remains a critical issue in many parts of Nigeria, especially in rural communities where access to care is limited and stigmas persist.
Meanwhile, residents of Sumore village have been left in shock, as they mourn the death of a young mother whose life was cut short under heartbreaking circumstances.
