The Adamawa State Police Command has launched an investigation into the reported suicide of a Nigerian Law School student at the Yola Campus. The deceased, identified as 27-year-old Olajuni Ayomiposi, an indigene of Ondo State, allegedly took his life after he was reportedly barred from writing his final bar examination.
The police confirmed the development in a statement released on Sunday night, signed by the command’s image maker, Sulaiman Nguroje. According to the statement, the unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday, December 6, 2025, and Ayomiposi was later pronounced dead while receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital.
Nguroje stated that the Adamawa Police Command received a report from the Chief Security Officer of the Nigerian Law School, Yola Campus, detailing the events leading to the student’s death. According to the report, around 11:30 am, Ayomiposi returned to the campus in a tricycle, visibly unsteady, and jumped over the hostel fence.
Shortly after, a security guard went to check on him and found him vomiting and unconscious. He was immediately rushed to the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, where he was admitted but later pronounced dead.
Initial accounts suggest that Ayomiposi ingested a harmful substance, reportedly rat poison, after he was prevented from sitting for the bar examination that commenced on the same day.
It was alleged that Ayomiposi was denied access to the examination hall because he did not respond to queries from school authorities. Additionally, reports indicate that he did not meet the minimum 75 percent attendance requirement, which is mandatory for participation in the bar examination.
The Nigerian Law School, which trains graduates of law faculties across Nigeria for legal practice, enforces strict attendance rules. Failure to meet these requirements typically prevents students from taking their final examinations.
While these are preliminary accounts, the police have not officially confirmed the specific reasons for barring the student, emphasizing the need for a full investigation to ascertain the facts.
The Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, has directed a discreet and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ayomiposi’s death. The police aim to uncover all relevant details and determine if any foul play or negligence contributed to the tragedy.
Nguroje said that the student’s body has been deposited at the hospital mortuary, and an autopsy is expected to be conducted as part of the investigation. Authorities have appealed to the public and school officials to cooperate fully with investigators.
The news of Ayomiposi’s death has sparked concern among students, lawyers, and members of the public. Many have expressed shock over the incident, highlighting the immense pressure faced by law students during bar examinations.
The Nigerian Law School is a professional institution established to train law graduates for legal practice in Nigeria. Successful completion of the school and passing the bar examination are mandatory to qualify as a practicing lawyer.
Attendance, discipline, and academic performance are key requirements for eligibility. Students are generally expected to maintain a minimum of 75 percent attendance and comply with administrative instructions throughout the program. Failure to meet these criteria can result in being barred from exams or delayed graduation.
Counselors and psychologists argue that institutions should provide stress management resources and ensure that students facing academic challenges receive guidance to prevent extreme reactions.
The Adamawa State Police have assured the public that the investigation will be conducted transparently and professionally. Findings from the investigation are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding Ayomiposi’s death, including whether institutional actions contributed to the tragedy.
Authorities have called for patience as the process unfolds and have warned against speculation that could hinder justice. Meanwhile, fellow students and staff of the Nigerian Law School in Yola are reportedly mourning the loss of Ayomiposi and providing support to one another during this difficult time.
