Bayelsa Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo Dies After Collapsing in Office

Bayelsa State has been thrown into deep shock and mourning following the sudden death of its Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2025. The incident occurred only hours after he reportedly collapsed in his office at the Government House, Yenagoa.

According to government sources, the deputy governor collapsed at about 1:30pm while carrying out official duties. He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Yenagoa, where doctors battled to save his life. Unfortunately, medical personnel later confirmed that he had died despite their efforts.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo was 60 years old at the time of his passing. Born on September 5, 1965, he had spent most of his adult life in public service, rising from a civil servant to a senator and eventually becoming the deputy governor of Bayelsa State.

Eyewitnesses at the Government House said the deputy governor suddenly slumped while holding a meeting with some aides. Panic immediately broke out as security and staff rushed him out of his office. He was placed in an official vehicle and taken to FMC Yenagoa within minutes.

At the hospital’s emergency unit, medical experts reportedly tried to stabilise him. However, a top hospital source, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak publicly, said the deputy governor was brought in “in very serious condition.” After several attempts to revive him, doctors eventually certified him dead.

The exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed, but close associates say Senator Ewhrudjakpo had maintained an extremely demanding work routine in recent months. A senior aide described him as a “workaholic” who hardly rested and often worked late into the night. “His schedule was always tight. He didn’t like to cancel meetings, no matter how tired he was,” the aide said.

Before becoming deputy governor in 2019, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo served as a member of the National Assembly, representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District. During his time in the Senate, he was involved in several committees and was known for speaking strongly about issues affecting the Niger Delta, especially environmental problems, underdevelopment, and youth unemployment.

He also served earlier in different positions within Bayelsa State’s public service and was widely seen as a dedicated and loyal administrator. His political journey began long before he entered the Senate, as he was actively involved in grassroots politics and community development initiatives.

Ewhrudjakpo, who hailed from Sagbama Local Government Area, was respected for his calm personality, discipline, and commitment to the development of the state. His colleagues often described him as a man who preferred to work quietly without seeking unnecessary attention.

News of his death spread quickly across Yenagoa, prompting emotional reactions from government officials, political associates, and ordinary residents who saw him as a hardworking and humble leader. Flags were expected to be flown at half-mast, and condolence messages have begun pouring in from across the state and beyond.

A senior government official, speaking shortly after the news broke, said the state was “shattered by the tragic loss.” He added that the deputy governor’s passing came at a time when the administration needed his leadership, especially as the government continues to address economic and security challenges in the state.

Many residents described the tragedy as a major blow to the state’s political community. Markets, offices, and public places in Yenagoa were filled with discussions about the incident, with many expressing disbelief that the deputy governor died so suddenly.

However, for now, the mood in Bayelsa remains one of deep sadness. Religious leaders have also called for prayers for the deputy governor’s family and the entire state. Churches and community groups are expected to hold special prayer sessions in his honour.

Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo’s death brings an end to a long and active career in public service. Many who worked with him say he will be remembered for his strong work ethic, loyalty, and commitment to the welfare of Bayelsa people.

Although the cause of his collapse has not yet been officially announced, the event has sparked discussions about the pressure faced by public officials, many of whom maintain heavy schedules with little rest.
