A private jet operated by Flybird on Sunday morning crash-landed at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) in Kano State, causing panic among airport users but ending without any loss of life.
The aircraft, which was flying from Abuja to Kano, landed at about 9:30 a.m. with 11 people on board. Among those on the flight were three crew members and eight passengers. Eyewitnesses at the airport said the aircraft experienced difficulties during landing, forcing the pilot to make an emergency touchdown on the runway.
According to sources at the airport, emergency response teams were immediately deployed after the incident. Airport fire service personnel, security operatives, and medical staff rushed to the scene to prevent any further danger. All passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft within minutes.
An eyewitness who was at the airport at the time said there was confusion when the aircraft landed awkwardly, but the situation was quickly brought under control. “We saw smoke and heard people shouting, but the airport officials acted fast. Everyone inside the plane came out alive,” the eyewitness said.
No deaths or serious injuries were reported as of the time of filing this report. Some passengers were said to have been checked by medical personnel as a precaution, but none required hospital admission.
The exact cause of the crash-landing has not yet been confirmed. Aviation authorities are expected to carry out a full investigation to determine what went wrong. Officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) are likely to inspect the aircraft and review flight records, weather conditions, and communication between the pilot and air traffic control.
As of Sunday afternoon, operations at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport were said to be normal, although there may have been brief disruptions immediately after the incident to allow emergency services to clear the runway and ensure safety.
MAKIA is one of Nigeria’s major international airports and serves as a key gateway to the northern part of the country. It handles both domestic and international flights and records thousands of passengers daily. Safety incidents at the airport are rare, and aviation authorities often stress the importance of strict safety standards.
Flybird, the operator of the private jet, is known to provide charter flight services within Nigeria. Private jets are commonly used by business executives, government officials, and individuals seeking flexible travel arrangements. While private aviation generally follows the same safety rules as commercial flights, incidents such as emergency landings can still occur due to mechanical faults, weather conditions, or other technical issues.
In recent years, Nigeria’s aviation sector has focused on improving safety standards. The NCAA regularly inspects aircraft and operators, while FAAN continues to upgrade airport facilities and emergency response systems. Experts say the safe evacuation of passengers in Sunday’s incident shows the importance of trained personnel and functional emergency services at airports.
More details are expected to emerge as investigations continue. Authorities are likely to release an official statement explaining the cause of the incident and any safety lessons learned.
