A 43-year-old fruit shop owner, Ahmed al Ahmed, has been identified as the man whose bravery helped save lives during the deadly shooting at Bondi Beach in Australia, an attack that police say deliberately targeted the Jewish community.
Al Ahmed, a father of two, is being hailed across Australia as a hero after video footage showed him running towards a gunman, wrestling a firearm from him and forcing the attacker to retreat, even after being shot.
He is currently receiving treatment in hospital after undergoing surgery for bullet wounds to his arm and hand, according to members of his family.
The shooting happened on Sunday night at Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most popular public spaces, as more than 1,000 people gathered for an outdoor event to mark Hanukkah, a major Jewish religious celebration.
What began as a peaceful gathering quickly turned into chaos when gunmen opened fire, sending crowds fleeing in panic.
By the time the shooting ended, 15 people were confirmed dead, with dozens more injured, making it one of the deadliest attacks in Australia in decades.

Al Ahmed’s cousin, Mustafa, told Australian media that the man suffered two gunshot wounds during the incident.
“He was shot once in the arm and once in the hand,” Mustafa said.
“He had to undergo an operation. Doctors say he is stable, but we are still waiting and praying.”
According to his family, Al Ahmed did not think about his own safety in that moment.
“He is a hero, 100 percent,” his cousin said. “He ran towards danger to protect others.”

The older man was killed at the scene during the police response, while the younger suspect remains in hospital in critical condition.
