The Kaduna State Police Command has announced plans to begin a 24-hour joint patrol along the Kaduna–Abuja Highway as part of heightened security measures for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The decision is aimed at ensuring the safety of commuters, residents, and travellers who will be moving in large numbers during the festive season. The Kaduna–Abuja Highway is one of the busiest roads in northern Nigeria, linking the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with Kaduna State and other parts of the North.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mansir Hassan.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, Rabiu Muhammad, has directed all tactical commanders to ensure round-the-clock patrols and continuous surveillance along the highway throughout the festive period.

The operation will be carried out in collaboration with the FCT Police Command and other security agencies. This joint approach, the police said, is intended to strengthen security coverage along the highway and border areas between Kaduna State and the Federal Capital Territory.

The Kaduna–Abuja Highway has, in the past, been a source of concern for travellers due to reports of kidnapping, armed robbery, and other criminal activities. These incidents often increase during festive periods when traffic volume is high and criminals attempt to take advantage of the situation.

In recent years, security agencies have stepped up patrols on the road to address these challenges. The latest initiative is part of ongoing efforts to maintain peace and restore confidence among road users.

According to the police, the joint patrols will involve regular stop-and-search operations, visible patrol teams, and intelligence-led surveillance. The presence of security personnel is expected to deter criminals and reassure motorists that adequate measures are in place.

“The patrols are designed to prevent criminal activities, increase police visibility, and reassure commuters and residents that their safety is our priority,” the statement added.

Commissioner of Police Rabiu Muhammad reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Kaduna State. He noted that the festive season often comes with increased movement of people, making security planning critical.

He assured the public that the patrols and surveillance would not end with the festive season but would be sustained to ensure long-term security along the highway.

The police commissioner also acknowledged the support of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies involved in policing the Kaduna–Abuja corridor. He said the cooperation between the police, military, and other security outfits has been vital in addressing security challenges in the area.

Kaduna State has, in the past, faced security issues ranging from banditry to highway crimes, especially along major routes connecting it to neighbouring states. The Kaduna–Abuja Highway, being a major economic and social link, has received special attention from security agencies.

During previous festive periods, many Nigerians avoided travelling by road due to fear of attacks. However, improved security efforts in recent times have encouraged more people to travel, especially those visiting family and loved ones for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The police urged members of the public to cooperate with security personnel during the patrols. Motorists were advised to obey traffic rules, avoid night travel where possible, and report any suspicious activity to the nearest security post.

The command also warned against the spread of false or misleading information on social media, noting that such reports could cause unnecessary panic and disrupt the festive atmosphere.

“The public is advised to disregard unverified information capable of causing fear or panic,” the statement said. “We urge citizens to rely on official channels for accurate security updates.”

Residents and frequent road users have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a positive step towards safer travel during the festive season.

A commercial driver who regularly plies the Kaduna–Abuja route said the presence of security personnel gives drivers confidence.

“When we see police and soldiers on the road, we feel safer,” he said. “This is especially important during Christmas when many people are travelling with their families.”

As Christmas approaches, markets, churches, motor parks, and highways are expected to witness increased activity. Security agencies across the country often raise alert levels during this period to prevent criminal acts and ensure peaceful celebrations.

The Kaduna State Police Command said it remains committed to ensuring that residents and travellers enjoy a safe and peaceful festive season.

With the deployment of 24-hour joint patrols on the Kaduna–Abuja Highway, authorities hope to reduce crime, boost public confidence, and ensure that Nigerians can travel without fear as they celebrate the season.
