The Kano State Police Command has arrested a notorious armed robbery suspect, Abba Aliyu, popularly known as Abba Fiya, following a distress call over an armed robbery incident in Hausawa Quarters of Kano metropolis.
The arrest, which took place on December 21, was carried out by operatives of the Anti-Daba Unit of the command. According to the police, the operatives acted swiftly after receiving a report that an armed robbery was in progress in the area.
In a press statement released by the Kano State Police Command, the arrest was described as part of ongoing efforts to reduce crime and improve public safety across the state.
“In line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police on prompt response to distress calls, operatives of the Anti-Daba Unit swiftly responded to a report of an armed robbery at Hausawa Quarters and arrested the suspect,” the statement said.
The suspect was identified as a 26-year-old resident of Dala Quarters. His arrest was carried out on the directive of the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.
During the arrest, police recovered a sharp knife from the suspect, which they believe was used to threaten victims during robbery operations.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that Abba Fiya is a known figure within criminal circles in Kano. The suspect reportedly confessed to being involved in several armed robberies and violent clashes linked to daba gangs within Kano metropolis.
Daba gangs are loosely organised street groups often associated with violence, robbery, and rivalry clashes in parts of Kano. These groups have been blamed for attacks on residents, market traders, and commuters, especially in densely populated areas.
“The suspect confessed to conducting several armed robberies and rivalry daba fights in areas such as Gobirawa Gangare, Dala, and Tudun Fulani Mayanka Quarters,” the police statement said.
The police further disclosed that investigations uncovered the suspect’s alleged involvement in crimes beyond Kano State. According to the command, Abba Fiya confessed to participating in armed robbery operations in Rivers and Lagos States.
“On discreet investigation, the suspect further confessed to a series of armed robberies resulting in deaths, causing injuries, and robbing of properties in Kano, Rivers, and Lagos States,” the police added.
While the police did not provide details of the specific incidents linked to the suspect, they said investigations are ongoing to verify his claims and identify other members of his criminal network.
Kano, one of Nigeria’s most populous states, has in recent years faced security challenges linked to street gangs, robbery, and violent youth groups. In response, the Kano State Police Command has strengthened special units such as the Anti-Daba Unit to tackle urban crime.
The command has also increased patrols, intelligence gathering, and community engagement to address security threats, particularly in crime-prone areas.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori commended the officers involved in the arrest, describing it as a major breakthrough in the fight against armed robbery and gang violence.
“The Commissioner of Police appreciates the officers for the notable arrest made,” the statement said.
He also called on residents to continue supporting the police by providing timely and useful information that can help prevent crime.
“Members of the public are urged to continue to cooperate with the Police by reporting any suspicious movement or activity,” the command added.
The police emphasised that public cooperation remains critical to effective policing, especially in urban areas where crimes often occur quickly and without warning.
Residents of Hausawa Quarters and surrounding communities expressed relief over the arrest, saying the area has experienced repeated incidents of robbery and gang violence.
A shop owner in the area, who requested anonymity, said, “We hear about robberies almost every week. This arrest gives us hope that the police are serious.”
Another resident said criminals often rely on fear and silence to operate, but timely reporting made the arrest possible.
The Kano State Police Command has encouraged residents to make use of its emergency contact numbers and the Nigeria Police Force “Rescue Me” mobile application to report emergencies and suspicious activities.
The “Rescue Me” app allows users to send distress alerts with their location directly to police control rooms, helping officers respond faster to incidents.
According to the police, investigation into the case is still in progress. The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
“Investigation is ongoing, and the case will be charged to court upon completion,” the statement said.
The police also assured the public that they will continue efforts to track down other suspects linked to armed robbery and gang activities across the state.
As Kano prepares for the end-of-year festivities, the police have intensified security measures to prevent crime and ensure the safety of residents.
