A 25-year-old man, identified as Maina Jano, has died after he was beaten during a turbaning ceremony in Yobe State, sparking shock and concern among residents of the area.

The incident happened on Thursday night, December 26, 2025, at about 11:50 p.m. The event took place at Barwa Fulani settlement in Kafetuwa, Karasuwa Local Government Area of the state. The ceremony was organised to mark the turbaning of Lamido Alhaji Kunjo, a respected traditional figure in the community.

According to sources, the ceremony attracted many people from nearby villages and settlements. Such events are common in many parts of Yobe State, especially among Fulani communities, where turbaning ceremonies are held to honour individuals who have been given traditional titles or leadership roles. These occasions usually include prayers, music, dancing, and cultural competitions.

On the night of the incident, youths were said to be taking part in a Shadi competition. Shadi is a popular cultural activity often performed during celebrations. It involves singing, drumming, and energetic dancing, mostly by young men. The competition is meant to promote unity, culture, and entertainment during social gatherings.

However, the joyful mood of the ceremony reportedly changed when an argument broke out. Sources said Maina Jano, who was from Nassara Fulani settlement in Kumaganam, Yusufari Local Government Area, was attacked by an unidentified man during the event. The exact cause of the fight was not immediately clear.

Witnesses said Jano was beaten severely and sustained serious internal injuries. People at the scene rushed to help him when they realised the extent of his injuries. He was quickly taken to the General Hospital in Kumaganam for medical treatment.

Despite efforts by medical workers to save his life, Jano later died from his injuries. His death threw the community into mourning, as friends, family members, and fellow youths struggled to come to terms with the loss.

Residents of Barwa Fulani settlement described the incident as unfortunate and disturbing. Many said such ceremonies are meant to bring people together and strengthen community ties, not end in violence or death.

“This is very sad. We came to celebrate, but we ended up losing a young life,” a community member said. “We hope the authorities will find out what really happened.”

In recent years, concerns have been growing over the involvement of youths in fights during social events in some parts of the state. Community leaders have often warned against violence during ceremonies and called for better organisation and security at such gatherings.

Yobe State, like many other states in the North-East, places high value on traditional institutions and cultural practices. Turbaning ceremonies are important events that symbolise respect, leadership, and service to the people. They are usually attended by elders, youths, and invited guests from different areas.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the police. However, residents expect security agencies to investigate the matter and identify those responsible for the attack. Many are calling for justice for the deceased and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
