Troops of the Nigerian military under Operation Hadin Kai have arrested a suspected suicide bomber and recovered materials believed to be meant for making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Borno State.

The arrest took place on Monday, December 29, 2025, in Bama Local Government Area, one of the communities that has been affected by years of insurgency in the North-East. The suspect was picked up by troops of the 152 Task Force Battalion working together with other security agencies.

The arrest was confirmed on Tuesday in a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, North-East Operation Hadin Kai, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba.

According to the statement, the suspect, identified as Abubakar Mustapha, was apprehended at the Banki Central Mosque in Bama. He was reportedly found in possession of primed IED components, raising fears that an attack could have been planned to happen soon.

Security sources said the arrest helped prevent what could have resulted in loss of lives, especially considering the sensitive location where the suspect was found.

Lt Col Uba said preliminary investigations showed that Mustapha is from Bama Local Government Area and had access to additional materials linked to terrorist activities.

“The suspect was found in possession of primed IED components, indicating a possible imminent attack,” the statement said.

The military said the suspect is currently undergoing detailed interrogation to help security agencies uncover his sponsors, collaborators, and any links to known terrorist groups operating in the region.

According to the Joint Task Force, intelligence gathered from the suspect could help prevent future attacks and lead to the arrest of other members of terrorist cells.

Lt Col Uba said the investigation is ongoing and assured residents that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure public safety.

Operation Hadin Kai is the military operation responsible for counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East, particularly against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements.

In recent months, troops under the operation have increased patrols, checkpoints, and intelligence-led operations across Borno State and neighbouring areas.

Lt Col Uba said troops remain on high alert and continue to maintain aggressive patrols and a strong presence to stop attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure.

“Troops of JTF NE Operation Hadin Kai continue to maintain aggressive patrols, intelligence-led operations, and sustained presence to prevent attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure,” he said.

The military also called on members of the public to support ongoing counter-terrorism efforts by providing credible and timely information.

Residents were urged to report suspicious movements, strange behaviour, or unfamiliar persons to the nearest security agency.

According to the military, cooperation between civilians and security forces remains one of the strongest tools in fighting terrorism in the region.

The arrest of the suspected bomber comes just days after a deadly attack in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. On December 24, a suicide bomber struck at Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque in Gamboru Market during evening prayers.

The attack led to the death of five worshippers, while at least 35 others were injured. The incident shocked residents and renewed fears about possible renewed attacks during the festive season.

Borno State has been the centre of insurgency in Nigeria for over a decade. Communities such as Bama, Banki, Gamboru, and parts of Maiduguri have experienced attacks, displacement, and destruction.

Although military operations have weakened insurgent groups and reclaimed many areas, security challenges still remain, especially in rural and border communities.

In recent years, the Nigerian military, working with local vigilante groups and international partners, has recorded successes in reducing attacks and allowing displaced persons to return to their homes.

However, incidents like the recent mosque attack and the arrest of a suspected bomber show that threats have not been completely eliminated.

Residents of Bama have expressed relief following the arrest, saying it may have prevented another tragedy.

A trader in the area said, “We are grateful to the soldiers. With what happened in Maiduguri last week, everyone has been living in fear. This arrest gives us some hope.”

Religious and community leaders have also urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, especially during large gatherings.

The Nigerian military has reassured Nigerians that morale among troops remains high and those soldiers are fully committed to protecting lives and property.

Lt Col Uba said the fighting efficiency of troops under Operation Hadin Kai remains strong, despite the challenges of the terrain and the nature of insurgency warfare.

He added that the military would continue to adapt its strategies to respond to emerging threats and protect civilians.

Authorities have continued to advise residents to remain alert, cooperate with security agencies, and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic.
