Wife of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mrs Regina Akume, has publicly declared her continued love and loyalty to her husband, Senator George Akume, saying she has no other husband apart from him.
Mrs Akume, who is also a serving member of the House of Representatives representing Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency of Benue State, made the statement during a New Year Mass. Her remarks were captured in a video that later went viral on social media, drawing wide attention across political and social circles.
In the video, Mrs Akume spoke firmly and emotionally, making it clear that her position as Akume’s wife has not changed, regardless of public opinion or rumours.
“I want to tell the world that I still love Mr George Akume. He is my husband,” she said.
She went further to point out members of her family who were present at the event.
“That is his son sitting there, and that is also his daughter. I have no other husband but him. I do not care what the world says,” she added.
Her statement comes at a time when there has been growing public discussion about the Akume family, following reports that the SGF recently married another wife.
Senator George Akume is a well-known political figure in Nigeria. He is a former Governor of Benue State and a former Minister of Special Duties. In 2023, President Bola Tinubu appointed him as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, a key position in the Federal Government.
As SGF, Akume plays a major role in coordinating government policies and overseeing the work of ministries, departments, and agencies. His position has placed him and his family under increased public attention.
Towards the end of the immediate past year, reports emerged that Akume had married another wife. According to media reports, the woman is Queen Zaynab, who is said to be the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
The reports sparked discussions on social media and in public spaces, with many Nigerians expressing different opinions based on cultural, religious, and personal views. While some saw the development as a private family matter, others debated its implications for public office holders and their families.
It was against this background that Mrs Regina Akume’s public declaration attracted strong reactions.
Mrs Akume is not only the wife of the SGF but also an elected lawmaker. She has represented Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and is known in Benue State for her involvement in constituency projects and social causes.
Her position as a public office holder means her personal life often attracts attention, especially during moments of controversy.
Beyond family matters, Mrs Akume also used the occasion to speak about her recent health challenges. She described the period as difficult and emotionally demanding, saying it tested her faith and inner strength.
According to her, she went through a serious medical condition that caused concern among family members, friends, and supporters. However, she said she experienced divine healing and has now fully recovered.
“He is the Almighty Father. There is none like Him, and there is no power that is above His power,” she said.
“I thank God for granting me healing and making me healthy again.”
She reaffirmed her strong Christian faith, describing God as supreme and incomparable. Her testimony drew applause from those present at the Mass.
Religious leaders say such testimonies are common during New Year services, where worshippers reflect on past challenges and give thanks for life and health.
Mrs Akume’s statement has continued to generate reactions across Nigeria. Supporters have praised her courage and calmness, describing her words as dignified and mature.
“She spoke with strength and confidence,” said a women’s rights advocate. “Not everyone can stand in public and speak with such clarity during a sensitive family matter.”
Others have called for respect for the privacy of the Akume family, stressing that marriage issues should not be turned into public debates.
“This is a family matter,” said a civil servant in Makurdi. “People should focus on governance and allow families to handle their personal affairs.”
However, some social media users have continued to discuss the issue, reflecting Nigeria’s deep interest in the private lives of public figures.
In many parts of Nigeria, polygamy is culturally and religiously accepted, especially among certain ethnic groups and faiths. This often shapes public reactions to reports of a man taking another wife.
At the same time, modern views on marriage and family life have led to differing opinions, particularly among younger Nigerians and urban populations.
Despite the attention on her personal life, Mrs Akume has continued her duties as a lawmaker. Colleagues say she remains active in legislative work and constituency engagements.
A source close to the House of Representatives said she has not allowed the controversy to affect her public responsibilities.
“She is focused on her work,” the source said. “She attends sittings and continues to serve her constituents.”
As the new year begins, Mrs Akume’s message appears to be one of faith, loyalty, and resilience. By speaking openly, she has shared her personal position while also drawing strength from her religious beliefs.
Whether public discussions will fade or continue remains to be seen. However, her declaration has added clarity to her stance and reaffirmed her identity as both a public servant and a wife.
