The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man, Alabi Anthony, for allegedly raping and killing a woman, Olaseni Veronica, in Iboropa community in Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The incident, which reportedly happened last week, has shocked residents of the quiet rural community and raised fresh concerns about violence against women in the state.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly attacked the victim, raped her, and later strangled her to death. The body of the victim was said to have been discovered after she was reported missing, prompting concern among family members and neighbours.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abayomi Jimoh, said the suspect was arrested following an intelligence-led investigation by detectives.

He explained that the police were able to track the victim’s missing mobile phone, which eventually led them to the suspect. This breakthrough, he said, was key to solving the case within a short period.

“The suspect has confessed to the crime, admitting to having carnal knowledge of the victim and thereafter strangling her to death,” Jimoh said.

He described the incident as a “heinous and inhumane act” and assured the public that the police would ensure justice is served. According to him, the case has been transferred to the state police headquarters in Akure for further investigation and prosecution.

The killing has sparked anger and fear among residents of Iboropa and surrounding communities. Many have expressed worry over safety, especially for women and young girls who often travel alone or engage in daily activities without protection.

Community leaders in Akoko North-East have called for increased security presence and more awareness on personal safety. Some residents also urged the police to intensify patrols and respond quickly to distress calls.

Cases of sexual violence and murder have remained a major concern in Nigeria in recent years. Rights groups say many incidents go unreported due to fear, stigma, and lack of trust in the justice system. However, there have been growing calls for stronger action by law enforcement agencies and the courts.

In 2020, public outrage over rape and gender-based violence led to protests across several states in Nigeria. This pushed many state governments to declare a state of emergency on sexual and gender-based violence and to introduce tougher measures to handle such crimes.

Ondo State is among those that have taken steps to address the issue. The state government has, in the past, set up mechanisms to support victims and ensure offenders are punished. However, activists say more needs to be done, especially in rural areas where access to help is limited.

They also highlight the need for community cooperation, encouraging residents to share useful information with security agencies. According to them, timely reporting of suspicious activities can help prevent crimes or lead to quicker arrests.

Women’s rights organisations have continued to push for stricter enforcement of laws against rape and violence. They argue that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, in order to discourage others from committing similar crimes.

For the family of the victim, the focus remains on getting justice and closure. Friends and neighbours described the deceased as a quiet and hardworking woman whose death has left a deep void in the community.
