The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed reports claiming that its National Chairman, David Mark, has resigned from his position, describing the information as false and misleading.

In a press statement released by the Media Office of the National Chairman, the party said Senator Mark remains firmly in charge and is focused on leading the party towards future political contests, especially the 2027 general elections.

The statement, issued on Sunday, rejected the resignation claims in strong terms, calling them a deliberate attempt to spread confusion within the party. According to the ADC, there is no truth to the speculation and no plan whatsoever for Mark to step down.

“The assertion that Senator David Mark has stepped down exists only in the imagination of those bent on spreading falsehood and creating confusion within our party,” the statement read.

The party went further to describe the reports as a fabrication designed by individuals seeking to weaken the ADC at a time when it is gaining attention in Nigeria’s political space. It stressed that the leadership of the party remains united and committed to its goals.

Senator Mark, a former President of the Senate, is one of Nigeria’s most experienced politicians. He served as Senate President from 2007 to 2015 and has remained an influential figure in national politics. His leadership in the ADC is seen by many observers as part of efforts to reposition the party as a strong alternative to the dominant political parties in the country.

The ADC, though not as large as parties like the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has continued to build its presence across states. In recent years, smaller parties like the ADC have tried to appeal to Nigerians who are looking for new political options, especially among young voters.

Nigeria operates a multi-party system, but political power has largely been controlled by a few major parties since the return to democracy in 1999. This has led to growing calls for stronger opposition parties and more competitive elections.

Against this background, the ADC said the rumours about Mark’s resignation are part of attempts to destabilise the party and slow down its progress. The party warned that such actions could weaken democratic competition if left unchecked.

“The ADC leadership remains united, focused, and resolute in its mission to strengthen democratic values and provide credible leadership to Nigerians,” the statement added.

The party also linked the spread of the rumours to political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections. Although the elections are still some time away, political activities and alignments have already started taking shape across the country.

Analysts say early political positioning is common in Nigeria, as parties and politicians begin to form alliances, build structures, and test their popularity well before election periods. In this context, any sign of instability within a party can affect its chances of attracting supporters and credible candidates.

The ADC insisted that it will not be distracted by what it described as baseless claims. Instead, it said it is focused on strengthening its internal structure and expanding its reach across the country.

The statement also raised concerns about threats to Nigeria’s multi-party democracy. It warned against any attempt to create a one-party system, noting that healthy competition among parties is essential for democratic growth.

“The ADC, its leadership, and the majority of Nigerians are determined to resist any plot aimed at undermining Nigeria’s multi-party democracy,” the party stated.

The ADC called on Nigerians to ignore the resignation rumours and remain confident in the party’s leadership. It assured supporters that Senator Mark is fully committed to his role and to the party’s long-term vision.

For now, the denial appears to have settled the issue within party ranks, but it also highlights the role of misinformation in Nigeria’s political environment. False reports, especially on social media, have become more common and can quickly influence public opinion if not addressed promptly.

As the political landscape gradually shifts towards the next general elections, parties like the ADC are expected to face both opportunities and challenges. Their ability to stay united and present a clear vision will likely determine how much influence they can wield in the coming years.

With Senator David Mark still at the helm, the ADC says it remains focused on building a stronger platform that can compete effectively and offer Nigerians a credible alternative in future elections.
