At least seven people have been killed and dozens displaced following a violent clash between farmers and herders in Lanzai and Dosho communities of Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The incident, which also left several people injured and destroyed about 50 huts, has once again highlighted the persistent farmer-herder conflicts that continue to affect many rural communities across northern Nigeria.
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the deaths on Thursday and said security operatives had been deployed to the affected areas to prevent further violence.
According to the police, the crisis began after suspected herders allegedly attacked farmers working on farmlands located on the outskirts of Lanzai community.
The attack reportedly triggered anger among local youths, who organised a retaliatory action against Dosho, a settlement predominantly inhabited by Fulani herders.
The reprisal attack quickly escalated into widespread violence, leading to the destruction of homes, personal belongings and property worth millions of naira.
Police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed the details in a statement issued in Bauchi.
He explained that the command received reports of the initial attack on farmers and immediately began efforts to restore calm. However, before security agencies could fully contain the situation, aggrieved youths allegedly launched a revenge attack on the neighbouring settlement.
According to the police, the youths stormed Dosho community and set several huts on fire, resulting in extensive destruction.
Authorities confirmed that approximately 50 huts were burnt during the violence. Household items, food supplies and other valuables belonging to residents were also destroyed.
The destruction left many families homeless, forcing residents to seek refuge in nearby communities and safer locations.
Security officials said seven people lost their lives during the unrest, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured victims were reportedly taken to medical facilities where they are currently receiving treatment.
Residents of the affected communities described the violence as one of the most serious clashes witnessed in the area in recent times.
Witnesses said panic spread across neighbouring villages as news of the killings and destruction circulated, prompting many families to flee temporarily for fear of further attacks.
The latest incident adds to the growing list of farmer-herder conflicts that have troubled several states across Nigeria over the years.
Such clashes are often linked to disputes over land use, grazing routes, destruction of crops, access to water resources and competition for scarce resources.
As population growth, climate change and desertification continue to put pressure on available land, conflicts between farming and pastoral communities have become more frequent in many parts of the country.
In northern Nigeria especially, tensions often arise when cattle stray into farmlands and destroy crops, leading to disputes that sometimes escalate into deadly violence.
The recurring clashes have also contributed to displacement, loss of livelihoods and growing insecurity in rural communities.
In response to the latest violence, the Bauchi State Police Command has intensified security operations across the affected area.
The command said tactical teams and additional security personnel have been deployed to Lanzai, Dosho and neighbouring communities to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The police also announced that the Violent Crime Response Unit has been mobilised to strengthen security presence and support ongoing efforts to restore peace.
Security patrols have equally been increased in strategic locations across Darazo Local Government Area.
Police authorities said the deployment was necessary to reassure residents and prevent any fresh attacks or reprisals.
The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed a full-scale investigation into the incident.
According to the command, investigators have been tasked with identifying those responsible for both the initial attack on the farmers and the subsequent reprisal carried out by youths.
The police commissioner assured residents that all individuals found culpable would face the full weight of the law regardless of their background or community affiliation.
He also appealed for calm and urged residents not to take the law into their own hands.
Aliyu encouraged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist ongoing investigations.
Community leaders and stakeholders have also been urged to promote dialogue and peaceful coexistence among residents to prevent further escalation of tensions.
Over the years, federal and state governments have introduced various measures aimed at addressing farmer-herder conflicts, including peace-building initiatives, mediation efforts and policies designed to regulate grazing activities.
Despite these efforts, clashes continue to occur in several states, often resulting in loss of lives and destruction of property.
For now, attention remains focused on the affected communities in Darazo, where residents are counting their losses and hoping for a return to peace.
As investigations continue, many families who lost relatives, homes and possessions face the difficult task of rebuilding their lives after a conflict that has once again exposed the fragile relationship between farming and herding communities in parts of northern Nigeria.
