The Federal Government has completed the screening of Nigerians who registered to be evacuated from South Africa following growing security concerns and renewed fears of xenophobic attacks in the country.

The development marks a major step in the government’s efforts to bring affected Nigerians back home, as authorities prepare for the final phase of the evacuation exercise.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said the screening exercise began on June 4 and involved several Nigerian and South African agencies working together to verify the identities and eligibility of those seeking evacuation.

According to the ministry, the exercise was carried out by officials of the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, the South African Police Service, and immigration authorities.

The government explained that the screening was necessary to ensure that only genuine applicants who had registered for evacuation were included in the exercise.

Officials said the verification process focused on confirming the identities of applicants and determining their eligibility to participate in the planned evacuation programme.

With the screening now completed, the government is expected to determine the final number of Nigerians who have been cleared for evacuation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the next stage would involve concluding arrangements for aircraft that will transport the evacuees back to Nigeria.

“The Government will subsequently conclude arrangements for the deployment of aircraft to convey the evacuees back to Nigeria,” the ministry stated.

The planned evacuation comes amid renewed concerns over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa, where periodic outbreaks of xenophobic violence have continued to create fear among foreign nationals.

Over the years, Nigerians and other African migrants have occasionally been targeted during attacks linked to anti-foreigner sentiments in parts of South Africa. Such incidents have often led to loss of lives, destruction of businesses and displacement of residents.

Although South African authorities have repeatedly condemned xenophobic violence and promised action against those responsible, concerns remain among migrant communities whenever tensions rise.

The latest evacuation effort follows reports of growing insecurity and fears among some Nigerians residing in South Africa. Many of those who registered for evacuation are believed to have expressed concerns about their safety and the wellbeing of their families.

Nigeria and South Africa maintain strong diplomatic and economic ties and are regarded as two of Africa’s largest economies. However, relations between citizens of both countries have sometimes been strained by recurring attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa.

Previous waves of xenophobic violence have sparked diplomatic engagements between both governments, with Nigeria repeatedly calling for stronger protection for its citizens and other Africans living in the country.
