Several passengers are feared dead after a train operating on the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor derailed on Monday, raising fresh concerns about safety on one of Nigeria’s busiest standard-gauge railway routes.

The exact number of casualties had not been confirmed as of press time, but reports from the scene indicated that several passengers may have lost their lives, while others sustained injuries of varying degrees. Emergency responders and security agencies were deployed to the area to rescue victims and assess the extent of the damage.

The incident involved the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS), a major rail service operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). The route connects Warri in Delta State to Itakpe in Kogi State and serves thousands of passengers travelling between the South-South, North-Central and other parts of the country.

Confirming the incident, the NRC said emergency teams had been mobilised to the scene to assist affected passengers and ensure that the situation was brought under control.

“The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirms that an incident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) occurred today.

“Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance,” the statement said.

The corporation added that it was closely monitoring developments and would provide more information after receiving detailed reports from emergency personnel and investigators working at the scene.

“The corporation is closely monitoring developments, and a detailed statement will be issued as soon as more information becomes available,” the statement added.

Although officials were yet to provide details on the cause of the derailment, investigations are expected to focus on possible technical, mechanical or track-related issues that may have contributed to the incident.

The derailment caused panic among passengers and their relatives as news of the incident spread. Families of those believed to have been on board anxiously sought information about their loved ones while waiting for official confirmation from authorities.

Rail transport has become increasingly popular in Nigeria in recent years due to concerns about insecurity on some highways and the rising cost of road transportation. Many travellers see trains as a safer and more affordable means of moving across long distances.

The Warri–Itakpe rail line is one of the country’s most important railway projects. The standard-gauge corridor was developed to improve transportation, boost trade and support economic activities between several states. Since its commissioning, the route has recorded growing passenger traffic and has become a key link for business people, workers, students and other travellers.

However, Monday’s incident has once again drawn attention to the need for regular maintenance, strict safety checks and continued investment in railway infrastructure.

While train accidents are generally less common than road crashes in Nigeria, any major rail incident often attracts national attention because of the large number of passengers involved and the potential impact on public confidence in the transport system.

The Federal Government has invested heavily in railway development over the past decade as part of efforts to modernise the country’s transportation network. New rail projects have been launched across different regions, while existing routes have undergone rehabilitation and upgrades.

Monday’s derailment is expected to trigger a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the incident. Safety investigators and railway engineers are likely to examine the train, the condition of the tracks and other operational factors before reaching conclusions on the cause of the accident.

Meanwhile, rescue operations continued at the scene as emergency workers searched for survivors, evacuated the injured and worked to restore normalcy.

Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid speculation until official casualty figures and findings are released. The NRC also assured passengers that it would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

As families await news of their loved ones, attention remains focused on the rescue effort and the investigation that will determine what led to the derailment. For now, the nation watches closely as officials work to establish the full scale of the tragedy and provide support to those affected.
