Former President Goodluck Jonathan has celebrated the graduation of his son, Ariwera Jonathan, from Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom, describing the achievement as a proud moment for the family.
Jonathan announced the news in a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Thursday, where he congratulated his son on reaching an important academic milestone and wished him success in the future.
The former president expressed joy over Ariwera’s accomplishment, saying he and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, were proud of the hard work and commitment that led to the graduation.
“Congratulations to our son, Ariwera, on your graduation from Manchester Metropolitan University. Your mother and I are proud of your hard work. Wishing you the very best and a successful future ahead,” Jonathan wrote.
The message was accompanied by photographs from the graduation ceremony showing the former president, his wife and their son celebrating the occasion.
The images, which were shared on Jonathan’s verified Facebook page, attracted congratulatory messages from supporters, political associates, friends and well-wishers, many of whom wished the graduate success in his future career.
Although the former president did not disclose the course Ariwera studied or the degree he obtained, the announcement highlighted another important family milestone for one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures.
Goodluck Jonathan served as Nigeria’s President from 2010 to 2015 after previously serving as Vice President under the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
Before becoming President, Jonathan held several public offices, including Deputy Governor and Governor of Bayelsa State. He is widely remembered for conceding defeat in the 2015 presidential election to former President Muhammadu Buhari, a move that earned him praise both within Nigeria and internationally for helping to strengthen the country’s democratic process.
Since leaving office, Jonathan has remained active in peacebuilding, governance advocacy and election observation across Africa. Through the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation and other initiatives, he has continued to engage in programmes aimed at promoting democracy, conflict resolution and youth development.
His wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s First Lady between 2010 and 2015, has also remained involved in charitable activities and programmes focused on women and children.
The Jonathan family has generally maintained a private personal life despite the former president’s high public profile.
The couple have two children, Ariwera Jonathan and Aruabi Jonathan, and they have largely kept their family away from the political spotlight.
The graduation announcement therefore drew attention from many Nigerians who have followed Jonathan’s political career over the years.
Manchester Metropolitan University, where Ariwera graduated, is one of the United Kingdom’s well-known public universities. Located in Manchester, England, the institution offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and attracts students from many countries around the world.
Like many Nigerian families, the Jonathans joined relatives and friends in celebrating the completion of a university education, an achievement often regarded as an important step towards career development and personal growth.
In recent years, many children of Nigerian political leaders, business executives and professionals have pursued higher education in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and other countries, reflecting the growing international outlook of Nigerian students.
The United Kingdom remains one of the most popular destinations for Nigerian students because of its globally recognised universities, diverse academic programmes and long-standing educational ties with Nigeria.
According to education experts, thousands of Nigerians enrol in British universities every year for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in fields such as engineering, business, medicine, law, information technology and the social sciences.
The graduation also comes at a time when many Nigerian families continue to invest heavily in education despite rising costs, seeing it as one of the most reliable paths to personal advancement and national development.
The congratulatory message from Jonathan reflected those values, focusing on his son’s dedication and expressing confidence in his future.
His brief message also highlighted the pride many parents feel when their children successfully complete their education and prepare to begin the next phase of their lives.
As Ariwera Jonathan marks the completion of his studies, he joins thousands of graduates around the world who are expected to apply their knowledge and skills in different professions and contribute to society.
