A political pressure group, G-100, has described Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election in the Osun State governorship election as a template for opposition parties seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general elections.

The group urged opposition leaders across the country to put aside personal ambitions and party differences and work together towards a common political objective.

The G-100, in a statement issued on Sunday by Salihu Lukman on behalf of the group, congratulated Adeleke on his victory and commended the people of Osun State for what it described as their determination and courage during the election.

According to the group, the importance of the election went beyond Adeleke’s return to office, saying the outcome demonstrated what opposition parties could achieve when they overcome their differences and unite behind a candidate.

“The significance of what has happened in Osun goes far beyond the re-election of one governor. Osun has provided a template for 2027,” the group said.

The G-100 argued that the major problem facing the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections was not a lack of support among Nigerians but the division among political parties and their leaders.

“For weeks now, the G-100 has argued that Nigeria’s opposition does not suffer from a shortage of popular support. Its greatest challenge is fragmentation,” it said.

The group said the Osun election provided an opportunity for opposition leaders to study how political cooperation could improve their chances of defeating a stronger ruling party.

It noted that several opposition candidates and political leaders in the state had recognised the wider implications of the election and decided to support Adeleke rather than continue with separate campaigns.

The G-100 described the decision as an example of political maturity and a willingness by political actors to place what it called the larger democratic interest above personal ambition.

“Their decision was an affirmation that there are moments when the greater democratic interest must come before the ambitions of any individual or political party,” the group said.

The organisation said the development demonstrated that political leaders could make compromises when they believed that a common cause was more important than individual political interests.

It argued that opposition parties could combine their structures, supporters and resources to create a stronger political force capable of challenging the APC at the national level.

“The governorship candidates who stepped down and supported Governor Adeleke were each entitled to pursue their own ambitions. They chose instead to ask a more important question: what outcome best serves the people and strengthens the democratic cause?” the group said.

The G-100 urged opposition leaders planning to contest the 2027 presidential election and other political offices to adopt the same approach.

It said politicians should be prepared to sacrifice personal ambitions where necessary in order to achieve what they consider to be a broader national objective.

“Nigeria is bigger than any candidate, any ambition and any political party,” the statement said.

The group challenged politicians who believe that Nigeria needs a different political direction in 2027 to demonstrate the same courage, restraint and willingness to compromise which it said had been displayed by opposition actors in Osun.

According to the G-100, the ability of opposition politicians to work together could determine whether they would be able to present a serious challenge to the APC in the next general election.

It said the Osun experience showed that cooperation among opposition forces could produce a viable alternative when political leaders were willing to compromise.

“Osun has shown the pathway. The task now is to take that spirit of cooperation to the national stage,” the group said.

The statement came after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Adeleke the winner of the August 15 governorship election.

Adeleke secured victory over his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the APC, in a closely contested election that attracted considerable political attention across the country.

According to the results cited by the group, Adeleke won in 19 of the 30 local government areas in the state.

The election was closely watched because of the wider political implications for the 2027 general elections. Osun is considered an important political state and has remained a major battleground between the PDP and APC.

The outcome also came against the background of growing political realignments ahead of the next presidential election, with opposition politicians and parties exploring ways of working together.

The G-100 said the Osun result should therefore not be viewed only as a state-level political contest but as a lesson for opposition parties preparing for the national election.

It maintained that the opposition could not afford to repeat the pattern of presenting several candidates against one another if its objective was to defeat the ruling party.

According to the group, splitting votes among several opposition candidates could weaken the chances of any single candidate, even where the combined support for opposition parties was greater than that of the ruling party.

It therefore called for early discussions among opposition leaders to develop a common strategy before the 2027 elections.

The group also urged politicians to focus on issues affecting Nigerians rather than making the contest entirely about individual political ambitions.

Nigeria is expected to witness intense political activity in the months leading to the 2027 general elections, with political parties likely to begin strengthening their structures and building alliances.

The opposition has in recent months faced the challenge of bringing together politicians with different interests, political platforms and ambitions.

While several opposition leaders have spoken about the need for a broad coalition, differences over leadership, presidential tickets and the sharing of political positions remain major challenges.

The G-100 said such differences should not prevent opposition parties from reaching agreements where the larger objective is to provide Nigerians with an alternative to the ruling party.

It stressed that no individual politician or political party was bigger than Nigeria and called for sacrifices that would strengthen the democratic process.

The group’s position is likely to add to the growing debate over opposition cooperation as politicians begin preparations for 2027.

For the G-100, the lesson from Osun is that political unity, rather than the strength of individual candidates alone, could be decisive in a major election.

It therefore urged opposition leaders to learn from the state and carry the spirit of cooperation to the national stage.

The group said the coming election would provide an opportunity for political leaders to demonstrate whether they were prepared to put the interests of the country ahead of their individual ambitions.

It maintained that if opposition parties could overcome their divisions and agree on a common candidate and program, they would stand a better chance of presenting a strong challenge in 2027.
