The Osun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of an unidentified woman whose body was discovered on the premises of a church in the Obelewo area of Osogbo, the state capital.
The woman was reportedly found with her left wrist severed, with the missing body part suspected to have been taken away by unidentified persons.
The incident has raised concerns in the community as police detectives work to establish the identity of the deceased, the circumstances surrounding her death and the possible motive for the killing.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, disclosed the development in a statement on Sunday.
According to the police spokesperson, detectives visited the scene after the discovery was reported and commenced preliminary investigations.
Iniedu said the initial findings indicated that the woman had been killed before her body was abandoned at the church premises.
“The investigations revealed that the deceased was slaughtered and her left wrist severed and taken away by unknown persons,” he said.
The police have not identified the deceased and have not disclosed whether she was killed at the location where her body was found or brought there after her death.
Investigators are expected to examine the scene and gather evidence that could help establish what happened before and after the woman was killed.
The police are also expected to interview people in the area, including residents and possible witnesses, as part of efforts to identify the deceased and trace those responsible for the killing.
The corpse has been deposited at a hospital mortuary for an autopsy.
According to the police, the autopsy is expected to provide further information about the cause and manner of death and may assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The State Command’s Investigation Department has taken over the case and commenced a detailed investigation.
The police said the identity of the woman, the motive behind the killing and the circumstances that led to the removal of her wrist remained unknown.
The development has also raised concerns over the possibility that the killing may have involved ritual or other criminal activities, although the police have not established any motive and have not linked the incident to any particular group or practice.
The removal of a body part from a deceased person is likely to form a major part of the police investigation, as detectives seek to determine why the wrist was severed and what happened to it.
Police investigations into such cases typically involve forensic examination of the scene, post-mortem examination and efforts to establish the identity of the victim.
The authorities may also examine missing-person reports in Osogbo and surrounding communities in an attempt to identify the woman.
The discovery has renewed attention on the need for residents to report suspicious activities and missing persons to security agencies.
Community members are also expected to cooperate with investigators by providing information that could assist in identifying the deceased and those responsible for the killing.
The police command has not disclosed whether any suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.
It is also unclear how long the body had remained on the church premises before it was discovered.
The investigation department is expected to address these questions as it gathers more evidence.
The case comes amid wider concerns over violent crime and the safety of residents in parts of the country.
Although Osun is generally regarded as relatively peaceful compared with some states affected by insurgency and widespread bandit attacks, incidents of violent crime, including murder, continue to occur.
The police have repeatedly urged residents to remain vigilant and provide useful information to security agencies to help prevent criminal activities.
In the latest case, identifying the deceased is expected to be one of the first major steps in the investigation.
Once her identity is established, investigators may be able to trace her movements, identify people who last saw her and determine whether she had any known disputes or threats before her death.
The autopsy may also help detectives establish the timing and cause of death and provide evidence that could be useful in any eventual prosecution.
The police spokesperson assured that the investigation would continue until those responsible for the woman’s death were identified and brought to justice.
For residents of Obelewo and surrounding communities, the incident has highlighted the importance of community vigilance and prompt reporting of unusual activities.
The police have therefore continued to encourage residents to share information about suspicious movements and persons with the authorities.
As investigations continue, the police are yet to determine the motive for the killing or identify any suspect.
The discovery of the unidentified woman and the removal of her left wrist remain the central issues being investigated by the State Command’s Investigation Department.
