Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled an attempt by terrorists to abduct a large number of people at Unguwar Rogo in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The attack, which reportedly occurred along a road in the area, was said to have been carried out by fighters loyal to a notorious bandit kingpin, Malan Shuaibu.
The attackers reportedly blocked roads and launched an ambush on commuters, taking advantage of thick vegetation on farmland close to the road to conceal themselves.
Although the terrorists succeeded in abducting three people, the swift intervention of the troops prevented what could have been a major mass abduction.
At least nine other victims were rescued during the operation, while two female victims reportedly sustained gunshot wounds and were taken for medical treatment.
An eyewitness, who spoke about the incident, said the attack was believed to have been carried out as a reprisal for recent operations by security forces against Shuaibu’s group and its support network.
The resident said troops had earlier arrested seven suspected informants and logistics suppliers allegedly working for the bandit leader.
Those arrested were accused of providing information and assisting the group with logistics, including facilitating ransom payments through Point-of-Sale agents.
“The security forces arrested seven people who were informants and those who sent ransom money to them through POS. That is why one of his boys planned the mass abduction,” the resident said.
A security source also said troops were mobilised to Unguwar Rogo after receiving a distress call that terrorists had invaded the area, blocked roads and started abducting commuters.
The source said Shuaibu and his associates were allegedly angered by the arrest of some of their collaborators while trying to obtain motorcycles and Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol, for the terrorists.
The arrests were said to have disrupted the group’s logistics network and affected its ability to move men and supplies around the area.
The latest attack therefore appeared to be an attempt by the terrorists to retaliate against the security forces and recover some of their influence in the area.
According to the eyewitness, the attackers carefully positioned themselves in farmland close to the road, using tall vegetation as cover.
He said the vegetation made it easier for the terrorists to remain hidden from motorists and attack people travelling along the route.
The resident said security agencies had previously warned farmers against cultivating tall crops close to major roads because the vegetation could provide hiding places for criminals.
However, he said some farmers had failed to comply with the directive, thereby creating an opportunity for the attackers to conceal themselves.
The terrorists reportedly attacked commuters as they passed through the area.
According to the account, some of the occupants became vulnerable after vehicles lost control and veered off the road into surrounding bushes.
The attackers then targeted the occupants, apparently with the intention of abducting as many people as possible.
The quick response of the troops, however, disrupted the operation.
The resident said the soldiers engaged the attackers, forcing them to flee into the surrounding areas.
During the operation, nine victims were rescued from the terrorists, while three others were reportedly taken away by the attackers.
Two female victims sustained gunshot injuries during the incident and were receiving medical attention, according to the resident.
The troops have continued operations in the area to track the fleeing terrorists and locate those who were abducted.
Security personnel are also expected to intensify efforts to identify and dismantle the network providing information, money and other supplies to the terrorists.
The incident highlights the continuing security challenges in Zamfara State, where communities and road users have for years faced attacks, abductions and other criminal activities by armed groups.
Zamfara is one of the states in the North-West that have been badly affected by banditry. Criminal groups operating across parts of the region have carried out attacks on rural communities, kidnapped residents for ransom and disrupted farming and movement.
The activities of the groups have also affected local economies, as many residents have been forced to abandon farms and avoid travelling on some roads because of the risk of attack.
Security agencies have in recent months stepped up operations against terrorists and bandits in the North-West, targeting both their fighters and their support networks.
Authorities have increasingly focused on the logistics and financial channels that enable the armed groups to operate, including the supply of motorcycles, fuel, weapons, food and other materials.
The arrest of suspected informants and ransom facilitators in Zamfara is part of that wider effort to weaken the groups by disrupting their networks.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA is one of the military operations focused on tackling insecurity in the North-West. Its troops operate in areas affected by banditry and other forms of criminal activity, with the aim of protecting communities, rescuing victims and denying armed groups freedom of movement.
The latest incident also underlines the importance of intelligence and rapid response in preventing mass abductions.
In this case, troops were reportedly mobilised after receiving a distress call, enabling them to reach the area while the attackers were still operating.
The rescue of nine victims prevented a potentially larger number of people from being taken hostage, although the abduction of three others means security forces still face the task of locating them.
For residents of Unguwar Rogo and surrounding communities, the incident is another reminder of the security risks faced by people travelling through parts of Zamfara.
The continued military operation in the area is expected to focus not only on rescuing the abducted victims but also on preventing the attackers from regrouping and carrying out another attack.
Security forces are also expected to sustain efforts to dismantle the support network allegedly helping the terrorists with information, ransom payments, motorcycles, fuel and other logistics.
The success of such operations, security experts have often stressed, depends on sustained intelligence gathering, cooperation from local communities and quick response to distress calls.
For now, troops remain in the area as the search for the fleeing terrorists and the abducted victims continues.
