Popular Gospel Musician, Kirk Franklin, Opens Up About Estrangement From Mother

Grammy-winning American gospel singer Kirk Franklin has shared a deeply personal story about his relationship with his mother. In a recent interview, Franklin revealed that he stopped talking to his biological mother when he was 32 years old.

Franklin explained that the fallout began when he was trying to help his sister, who had just been released from prison and was struggling with drug addiction. He was the only one making efforts to provide her with accommodation and support, and the situation became overwhelming. A family intervention was organized to address his sister’s struggles, and Franklin hoped it would help.

However, the intervention took a troubling turn when Franklin’s mother arrived with her new husband. The meeting, which was meant to focus on helping his sister, ended with an emotional exchange that Franklin described as heart-wrenching.

During the intervention, after expressing that the focus should be on his sister rather than family dynamics, Franklin’s mother’s new husband made a comment that upset him. He told Franklin, “What you need to do, is call your mama sometimes.” Franklin felt this was an inappropriate remark, especially given the circumstances, and responded by stating that his mother was supposed to be the one taking responsibility, not her new husband.

The argument escalated, and Franklin was deeply hurt when his mother chose to leave with her new husband, disregarding his feelings. She walked out with him and her two children, leaving Franklin behind. He recalled feeling betrayed and disrespected by her decision.
