The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning for thunderstorms across the country from Thursday to Saturday.
This forecast comes as the federal government aims to prepare citizens for the impending weather changes.
NiMet’s weather outlook, released on Wednesday, highlights the potential for significant thunderstorms and urban flooding in many areas.
Starting from Thursday, NiMet predicts morning thunderstorms in the northern region of Nigeria.
States like Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna are expected to experience thunderstorms throughout the day.
The storms will also impact Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, and Kebbi states later in the day.
On Friday, morning thunderstorms are again forecasted for Taraba State.
Afternoon and evening storms are expected to spread across Kaduna, Kebbi, Taraba, and Adamawa states.
By Saturday, Taraba and Adamawa will see morning thunderstorms, with additional storms predicted in Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, and other areas.
The North-Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, will not be spared.
Morning thunderstorms are forecast for Niger, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, and Benue states.
NiMet warns that these regions can expect thunderstorms to develop later in the day as well.
Similar weather patterns are expected to continue throughout Friday and Saturday, with afternoon and evening storms likely across most parts of the North-Central region.
Southern Region Under Thunderstorm Watch
In the southern part of Nigeria, thunderstorms are also expected.
On Thursday, parts of Ebonyi and Enugu states will see morning thunderstorms.
Later in the day, the storms are expected to cover most areas of the southern region.
Friday will bring morning thunderstorms to Abia, Imo, Enugu, Oyo, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states, with more storms expected later in the day.
NiMet has cautioned that heavy downpours could lead to urban flooding in major cities across the country.
Residents are advised to stay away from flood-prone areas, especially during periods of heavy rain.
Strong winds may accompany the thunderstorms, which could create additional hazards.
The agency has urged the public to adhere to safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.
NiMet emphasized the need for airline operators to consult updated weather reports for better planning and safety measures.
Weather conditions can significantly impact daily life in Nigeria.
From transportation to agriculture, the consequences of severe weather events can be profound.
Thunderstorms can lead to infrastructure damage, disrupt travel, and pose risks to public safety.
Urban flooding can exacerbate existing challenges, particularly in densely populated areas where drainage systems may be inadequate.
