In a tragic incident in Niger State, an unidentified man has died following what has been described as a case of marathon sex with a lady at a guest house in Paiko, located in the Paikoro Local Government Area.
The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the death of the man, whose identity is yet to be established. According to the police, the man slumped while putting on his trousers after the encounter and was later confirmed dead at a nearby medical facility.
The spokesperson for the Niger State Police, Superintendent of Police (SP) Wasi’u Abiodun, shared details of the incident in a statement released on Thursday, October 17, 2024. The police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and are awaiting the results of a medical autopsy to determine the exact cause.
“An incident of a suspected sudden death was reported at Paiko Division, that on October 15 at about 8:50 pm, a yet-to-be identified male adult visited the Local Government Area (LGA) lodge with a lady, and thereafter, slumped and was rushed to a nearby medical facility in Paiko, where he was confirmed dead,” Abiodun explained.
The police spokesperson added that efforts are ongoing to trace the man’s relatives, as he had no means of identification on him. He was not carrying a mobile phone or any form of identification, making it difficult for authorities to notify his family or next of kin.
The statement further mentioned that the man allegedly went to the guest house, located near the Paiko popular market, to meet with a lady suspected to be a commercial sex worker. The guest house is frequented by traders who come from distant areas to do business in the local market, and it also serves as a resting place for visitors to the region.
The incident has drawn widespread attention, as it has raised questions about both the man’s sudden death and the broader issues of health and safety within the environment where it occurred.
While the police have refrained from speculating on the cause of death, there is a possibility that the autopsy will shed light on what may have led to the tragic incident. SP Abiodun stated that the police are exploring every angle and waiting for medical findings to conclude their investigation.
It remains unclear whether the man had any pre-existing health conditions or whether external factors contributed to his untimely death. The investigation will also focus on the circumstances surrounding his visit to the lodge and whether any foul play was involved.
The incident also brings to light the larger issue of unregulated commercial sex work in many parts of Nigeria. Although prostitution is illegal in Nigeria, it is a widespread and often unmonitored activity, particularly in rural areas like Paiko, where lodges and guest houses are often used as venues for such encounters.
Many women who engage in commercial sex work do so without any form of regulation or health monitoring, which poses a risk not only to themselves but also to their clients. Health concerns, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and other related health issues, are prevalent within this industry due to the lack of access to proper healthcare and screening.
In addition to health risks, there is also the issue of safety. Commercial sex workers are often vulnerable to violence and exploitation, and incidents like this highlight the need for greater oversight and protection for both the women involved and their clients.
While the cause of the man’s death has not been confirmed, sudden deaths in similar circumstances have been linked to a range of factors, including underlying health problems, drug use, or the stress of engaging in prolonged physical activity.
