As Nigeria grapples with a soaring economy and rising costs, Senator Orji Kalu claims that President Bola Tinubu is aware of the struggles facing ordinary Nigerians.

In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kalu shared insights into Tinubu’s approach to leadership.

He stated that the president frequently takes late-night drives around Abuja to understand the challenges faced by the people.

“Tinubu knows that Nigerians are suffering and hungry. He is a street person; he knows the streets very well,” Kalu said.

Rising Costs and Economic Hardships

Since the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, the prices of basic goods have skyrocketed.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported an inflation rate of 32.7 percent in September 2024.

This surge in costs has left many Nigerians struggling to afford essential items.

“Basic goods have become too expensive for millions of Nigerians,” a market trader in Lagos lamented.

The government’s recent economic changes have resulted in widespread hardship, affecting the daily lives of citizens across the country.

Kalu’s Defense of the Administration

Senator Kalu argued that President Tinubu’s decisions are “very courageous” and that the current economic challenges are not unique to Nigeria.

He pointed out that the global economy is still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pressure of COVID-19 has not gone,” he explained.

Kalu admitted that the economic situation is tough, saying, “Let me be honest with you. I know things are not the way they are supposed to be.”

He emphasized that the economic difficulties are felt worldwide, not just in Nigeria.

Efforts to Reposition the Economy

Despite the struggles, Kalu expressed optimism about the government’s efforts to reform the economy.

He believes that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is working hard to improve the country’s economic standing.

“They are trying to reform the economy. They are trying to bring back the economy where it is supposed to be,” he stated.

Kalu urged Nigerians to remain patient as the government implements changes that will eventually benefit the populace.

Public Sentiment and Criticism

Nigerians have voiced frustrations over the perceived disconnect between lawmakers and the realities of everyday life.

Many citizens accuse members of the National Assembly of being insensitive to their plight, living in luxury while the people struggle.

In response, Kalu defended his colleagues, claiming that many of these accusations are unfounded.

“I am in the Senate, and a lot of things are said about the Senators. Most of these things are not true,” he said.

He emphasized that no lawmaker is provided with official vehicles, arguing that committee members have access to transport, but not individual senators.
