The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has announced the suspension of actress Halima Abubakar following a thorough investigation into her conduct.
The decision comes after a two-year inquiry into allegations of “unprofessional misconduct” against the actress. The guild found Halima guilty of spreading false information about fellow members, associates, and patrons, including serious allegations of extramarital affairs with prominent individuals.
In a memo released on Friday, the AGN stated that Halima’s actions have caused significant harm to the reputation of Nollywood. The memo described the findings of the special secret investigation panel, which was established to probe the activities of some bloggers since 2022.
“After two years of painstaking investigations, the panel found that Miss Halima Abubakar was behind all the slandering information of our members, associates, and patrons,” the memo read.
As a result of the findings, Halima Abubakar has been placed on indefinite suspension. The AGN has mandated that she must not participate in any filming projects during this period.
“The National Disciplinary Committee will determine her full punishment,” the memo stated.
The AGN emphasized the seriousness of the situation. National and state chapter task forces have been assigned to monitor compliance with the suspension order. The guild warned that any violations of these rules could result in further disciplinary actions.
The AGN also acknowledged the diligent work done by the investigative panel, commending their thorough and professional approach to the investigation.
The controversy surrounding Halima Abubakar is not new. Earlier this year, a federal high court in Abuja ordered her to pay N10 million in damages for making derogatory remarks against cleric Johnson Suleman.
In 2022, Halima publicly accused Suleman, the general overseer of Omega Fire Ministries International, of having a past romantic relationship with her. Suleman responded by threatening to sue for defamation, leading to the court’s decision against Halima.
This latest suspension comes in the context of ongoing investigations into other female members of the AGN who are allegedly involved in scandals linked to prominent figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
According to the AGN’s memo, these investigations are part of a broader effort to maintain the integrity of the guild and protect the reputation of its members.
“Some female members on the watch-list are being investigated by the secret panel, especially regarding the recent release of names purported to have had dealings with the Senate President,” the AGN stated.
In a related matter, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has also denied allegations of extramarital affairs, which surfaced earlier this year. His denial came after a series of rumors linked him to various female members of the AGN.
“I have nothing to hide, and I will not entertain such baseless claims,” Akpabio said in July 2024. “These rumors are nothing but attempts to damage my reputation.”
