In a move aimed at calming public outrage, Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has assured the family of slain musician Chikezie Okezie Nwamba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah, that swift justice will be served.
The police commissioner, accompanied by state government officials, visited the grieving family on Saturday, one day after the musician was reportedly shot and killed by a policeman.
The tragic event, which has sent shockwaves across Enugu State and beyond, has drawn attention to issues of police misconduct and community trust in law enforcement.
During his visit, CP Uzuegbu expressed his heartfelt sympathy to Igbo-Jah’s family, friends, and the entire Enugu community. He acknowledged the pain caused by the incident and assured everyone that the investigation would be handled with urgency and transparency.
“We are committed to uncovering the full truth behind this terrible act,” Uzuegbu said. “I want the people of Enugu State to know that the Nigeria Police Force will not protect or shield any officer who goes against the law.”
This statement came as a relief to some but raised questions for others, who are calling for justice without delay.
The slain musician, widely celebrated for his Ogene music, had become a cultural icon in Enugu. Known for his unique talent and the pride he brought to the Igbo community, his untimely death has left many devastated.
“He was more than a musician to us,” said a family friend who attended the visit. “He carried our culture in his music and inspired a generation.”
The spokesperson for the Enugu Police Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, has also provided critical updates on the case. According to DSP Ndukwe, the officer responsible for the fatal shooting has been identified as Police Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph.
“The officer is now in custody and will face the full weight of the law,” DSP Ndukwe confirmed. “We want to ensure the public that this incident will be handled with the highest level of integrity.”
Photographs of Inspector Joseph were shared by the police to demonstrate transparency in the investigation. However, for the grieving family and the broader community, the pain remains raw.
“It’s hard to believe that a man who gave so much to his community could be taken in such a senseless manner,” Igbo-Jah’s brother said.
The police commissioner addressed this sentiment directly during his visit, emphasizing the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to discipline and justice. He stated that the actions of one officer do not represent the values of the entire force.
“The Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined organization, and officers who violate the law must be held accountable,” Uzuegbu insisted. “We want this incident to serve as a lesson and deterrent to all officers.”
Enugu State government officials who accompanied the police commissioner echoed his statements, pledging their support to ensure that justice is achieved.
