A mining site collapse in Galkogo village of Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State has resulted in the loss of one life and left several miners trapped underground, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).
The incident, which occurred on June 3, has prompted an urgent response from emergency services as efforts continue to rescue those still trapped.
Director-General of NSEMA, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, disclosed that one person has been confirmed dead, while six others have been rescued with severe injuries.
However, more than 40 individuals remain trapped beneath the rubble, awaiting rescue operations. “The cause of the mining site collapse was a result of heavy rainfall impacts on the soil,” stated Baba-Arah during a briefing in Minna on Tuesday.
He expressed deep concern over the precarious conditions at the site, noting that ongoing rainfall has exacerbated the situation, making it challenging for rescuers to access and evacuate trapped individuals.
