False Propaganda: Nigerian Army Refutes IPOB Leader’s Mass Killings Allegations

    Share

In response to alarming allegations of mass killings in the Southeast region of Nigeria, the Nigerian Army (NA) has vehemently denied the accusations, labeling them as part of a calculated campaign of misinformation.

The Army also singled out Simon Ekpa, the Finland-based self-proclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) terrorists, as the orchestrator of what it described as “malicious propaganda.”

According to Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, in a release on Wednesday, the video circulated by Ekpa purportedly showing Nigerian troops involved in mass killings is a fabrication aimed at sowing discord and inciting violence.

“The self-acclaimed leader through spurious and unfounded claims raised alarm on a viral video alleging that troops of NA are carrying mass killing of innocent Igbos at Oliver and dumping them in the River,” stated Nwachukwu.

The Army clarified that the troops depicted in the video were actually personnel of the Nigerian Navy, engaged in routine test firing of a weapon system mounted on a vehicle.

“In the first instance, the troops in the video footage are not personnel of the Nigerian Army as the insignia visible on their berets clearly identifies them as personnel of the Nigerian Navy,” affirmed Major General Nwachukwu.

He further emphasized that the incident occurred in the Southwest region, not the Southeast as claimed by Ekpa.

Furthermore, the Army’s preliminary investigation found no evidence to support the allegations of individuals being shot and dumped in the river.

“There was no evidence to support the assertion that individuals were being shot at in the river, nor have there been any report from local communities regarding the discovery of corpses in the area,” added Nwachukwu.

The Nigerian Army urged the public to disregard Ekpa’s claims and focus on verified information.

“The NA wishes to enjoin the public to disregard the unfounded claims and irredeemable falsehood being propagated by Simon Ekpa and his associates, whose apparent objective is to disseminate misinformation and incite unrest,” Nwachukwu said.

In reaffirming its commitment to peace and security, the Nigerian Army assured citizens of its readiness to counter any attempt to destabilize the Southeast region.

The army spokesperson said, “The NA and indeed sister services and other security agencies remain steadfast in our commitment to maintaining peace and order, ensuring the safety and security of all citizens in the country.

Acknowledging the resilience of law-abiding citizens, particularly in the Southeast, the Army commended their efforts in promoting peace and unity across Nigeria.
